Enhanced gesture-based image manipulation

A remote wand for controlling the operations of a media system is provided. The wand may be operative to control the movement of a cursor displayed on screen by the position and orientation at which the wand is held. As the user moves the wand, the on-screen cursor may move. The user may use the wand to control a plurality of operations and applications that may be available from the media system, including for example zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image application, an illustration application, and a media application.

Although manual gesture has long been suggested as an intuitive method of input for horizontal human-computer systems, little research has been conducted into observing user preferences for tabletop gesture interaction. This is particularly the case for computer vision-based gesture input, where the recognition of different hand shapes opens up a new vocabulary of interaction. In this paper, results from an observational study of manual gesture input for a tabletop display are discussed. Implications for tabletop gesture interaction design include suggestions for the use of different hands shapes for input, the desirability of combined touch screen and computer vision gesture input, and possibilities for flexible two-handed interaction.

A study of hand shape use in tabletop gesture interaction

In this paper we introduce the Tangible Video Editor (TVE), a multi-user, tangible interface for sequencing digital video. We present a new approach to tabletop interaction by using multiple handheld computers embedded in plastic tokens. Drawing from the rich physical experience of tradition film editing techniques we designed the TVE to engage multiple users in a collaborative process and encourage the exploration of narrative ideas. We used active tokens to provide a malleable interface, enabling users to organize the interface components in unspecified ways. Our implementation improves upon common projection-based tabletop interfaces in a number of ways including a design for use beyond dedicated two dimensional spaces and a naturally scaling screen resolution.

An image inputter inputs image data in which a user has been captured. An extractor extracts a region corresponding to a hand of the user included in the image data input by the image inputter. A determinator determines whether or not the region corresponding to the hand of the user extracted by the extractor is in a stationary state. If it is determined by the determinator that the region corresponding to the hand of the user is in a stationary state, a recognizer recognizes the shape of the region corresponding to the hand of the user extracted by the extractor. Otherwise, if it is determined by the determinator that the region corresponding to the hand of the user is not in a stationary state, the recognizer recognizes the movement of the region corresponding to the hand of the user extracted by the extractor. An inputter inputs data associated with the shape or the movement recognized by the recognizer.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an animation editing system which can make gestures with the hands and fingers execute physical operations. SOLUTION: A user 160 executes each operation for editing animations by means of the user's gestures with the hands and fingers on an animation editing screen which is projected to a screen 150 from a projector 130 connected to an image-projecting computer 110. A camera 140 connected to an image-processing computer 120 picks up the gestures, and the image-processing computer 120 recognizes the positions of the hands and fingers. The image pickup computer 110 recognizes the meanings of the gestures from the positions of the user's 160 hands and fingers, executes image editing processing according to the gestures, and projects the animation editing screen again to the screen 150. In this paper, we describe our prototype system for movie editing on an augmented desk. We aim to enable a user to edit a movie in an intuitive operation using both hands. In the current prototype system, a user can make a movie by editing a sequence of pictures. We introduce some hand gestures in the current system and then propose other hand gestures which would be implemented in the future.
