Conductive MXene Nanocomposite Organohydrogel for Flexible, Healable, Low‐Temperature Tolerant Strain Sensors

Recently, self-healing hydrogel bioelectronic devices have raised enormous interest for their tissue-like mechanical compliance, desirable biocompatibility, and tunable adhesiveness on bioartificial organs. However, the practical applications of these hydrogel-based sensors are generally limited by their poor fulfillment of stretchability and sensitivity, brittleness under subzero temperature, and single sensory function. Inspired by the fiber-reinforced microstructures and mechano-transduction systems of human muscles, a self-healing (90.8%), long-lasting thermal tolerant and dual-sensory hydrogel-based sensor is proposed, with high gauge factor (18.28) within broad strain range (268.9%), low limit of detection (5% strain), satisfactory thermosensation (-0.016 °C-1), and highly discernible temperature resolution (2.7 °C). Especially by introducing a glycerol/water binary solvent system, desirable subzero-temperature self-healing performance, high water-retaining, and durable adhesion feature can be achieved, resulting from the ice crystallization inhibition and highly dynamic bonding. On account of the advantageous mechanoreception and thermosensitive capacities, a flexible touch keyboard for signature identification and a "fever indicator" for human forehead's temperature detection can be realized by this hydrogel bioelectronic device.

Tough hydrogels, polymeric network structures with excellent mechanical properties (such as high stretchability and toughness), are emerging soft materials. Despite their remarkably mechanical features, tough hydrogels exhibit two flaws (freezing around the icing temperatures of water and drying under arid conditions). Inspired by cryoprotectants (CPAs) used in the inhibition of the icing of water in biological samples, a versatile and straightforward method is reported to fabricate extreme anti-freezing, non-drying CPA-based organohydrogels with long-term stability by partially displacing water molecules within the pre-fabricated hydrogels. CPA-based Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide (PAAm) tough hydrogels were successfully fabricated with glycerol, glycol, and sorbitol. The CPA-based organohydrogels remain unfrozen and mechanically flexible even up to -70 °C and are stable under ambient conditions or even vacuum.

Skin-Inspired Antibacterial Conductive Hydrogels for Epidermal Sensors and Diabetic Foot Wound Dressings

Conductive hydrogels are a class of stretchable conductive materials that are important for various applications. However, water-based conductive hydrogels inevitably lose elasticity and conductivity at subzero temperatures, which severely limits their applications at low temperatures. Herein we report anti-freezing conductive organohydrogels by using an H2O/ethylene glycol binary solvent as dispersion medium. Owing to the freezing tolerance of the binary solvent, our organohydrogels exhibit stable flexibility and strain-sensitivity in the temperature range from −55.0 to 44.6 °C. Meanwhile, the solvent molecules could form hydrogen bonds with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) chains and induce the crystallization of PVA, greatly improving the mechanical strength of the organohydrogels. Furthermore, the non-covalent crosslinks endow the conductive organohydrogels with intriguing remoldability and self-healing capability, which are important for practical applications.

Anti-freezing, Conductive Self-healing Organohydrogels with Stable Strain-Sensitivity at Subzero Temperatures.

Hydrogels have drawn considerable attention in the past two decades due to their excellent biocompatibility and multi-stimuli responsiveness. They have a wide range of applications in the fields related to tissue engineering, sensors and biomedicine. Their applications are strongly influenced by the surface properties of hydrogels and the interfacial interactions between hydrogels and other substrates. In particular, the surface wettability and adhesion of hydrogels decide their applications as drug carriers and wound dressing materials. Nevertheless, there is a lack of systematic discussion on the surface functionalization strategies of hydrogels. Therefore, this review aims at summarizing the strategies of functionalizing the surfaces of hydrogels and bonding hydrogels with other solid substrates. It also explores the challenges and future perspectives of interfacial engineering of hydrogels.
