Scheduling in cloud manufacturing: state-of-the-art and research challenges

Cloud manufacturing is an emerging service-oriented business model that integrates distributed manufacturing resources, transforms them into manufacturing services, and manages the services centrally. Cloud manufacturing allows multiple users to request services at the same time by submitting their requirement tasks to a cloud manufacturing platform. The centralized management and operation of manufacturing services enable cloud manufacturing to deal with multiple manufacturing tasks in parallel. An important issue with cloud manufacturing is therefore how to optimally schedule multiple manufacturing tasks to achieve better performance of a cloud manufacturing system. Task workload provides an important basis for task scheduling in cloud manufacturing. Based on this idea, we present a cloud manufacturing multi-task scheduling model that incorporates task workload modelling and a number of other essential ingredients regarding services such as service efficiency coefficient and service quantity. Then we investigate the effects of different workload-based task scheduling methods on system performance such as total completion time and service utilization. Scenarios with or without time constraints are separately investigated in detail. Results from simulation experiments indicate that scheduling larger workload tasks with a higher priority can shorten the makespan and increase service utilization without decreasing task fulfilment quality when there is no time constraint. When time constraint is involved, the above strategy enables more tasks to be successfully fulfilled within the time constraint, and task fulfilment quality also does not deteriorate. Multi-task scheduling problems in cloud manufacturing are the focus.Task inherent attributes are considered.A model for attribute-based multi-task scheduling is built.With no time constraint, scheduling large tasks with a higher priority can effectively decrease the total completion time.With time constraint, the scheduling method can make more large tasks successfully executed.

As a new service-oriented smart manufacturing paradigm, cloud manufacturing (CMfg) aims at fully sharing and circulation of manufacturing capabilities towards socialization, in which composite CMfg service optimal selection (CCSOS) involves selecting appropriate services to be combined as a composite complex service to fulfill a customer need or a business requirement. Such composition is one of the most difficult combination optimization problems with NP-hard complexity. For such an NP-hard CCSOS problem, this study proposes a new approach, called multi-population parallel self-adaptive differential artificial bee colony (MPsaDABC) algorithm. The proposed algorithm adopts multiple parallel subpopulations, each of which evolves according to different mutation strategies borrowed from the differential evolution (DE) to generate perturbed food sources for foraging bees, and the control parameters of each mutation strategy are adapted independently. Moreover, the size of each subpopulation is dynamically adjusted based on the information derived from the search process. Different scales of the CCSOS problems are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has superior performance over other hybrid and single population algorithms, especially for complex CCSOS problems.

Multi-population parallel self-adaptive differential artificial bee colony algorithm with application in large-scale service composition for cloud manufacturing

This paper addresses the QoS-aware cloud service composition problem, which is known as a NP-hard problem, and proposes a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) to solve it. The proposed algorithm combines two phases to perform the evolutionary process search, including genetic algorithm phase and fruit fly optimization phase. In genetic algorithm phase, a novel roulette wheel selection operator is proposed to enhance the efficiency and the exploration search. To reduce the computation time and to maintain a balance between the exploration and exploitation abilities of the proposed HGA, the fruit fly optimization phase is incorporated as a local search strategy. In order to speed-up the convergence of the proposed algorithm, the initial population of HGA is created on the basis of a heuristic local selection method, and the elitism strategy is applied in each generation to prevent the loss of the best solutions during the evolutionary process. The parameter settings of our HGA were tuned and calibrated using the taguchi method of design of experiment, and we suggested the optimal values of these parameters. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the simple genetic algorithm, simple fruit fly optimization algorithm, and another recently proposed algorithm (DGABC) in terms of optimality, computation time, convergence speed and feasibility rate.

A hybrid approach using genetic and fruit fly optimization algorithms for QoS-aware cloud service composition

Recently, cloud manufacturing has attracted much attention from both academic and industry communities. Manufacturing cloud service composition and optimization is critical to the optimal resources allocation in cloud manufacturing. Since there are many manufacturing cloud services available with similar functions but different quality of service (QoS), and with potential quality correlations among them, such correlations must to be considered for manufacturing cloud service composition. In this paper, a correlation-aware manufacturing cloud service description model is presented to characterize the QoS dependence of an individual service on other related services. Based on such a model, a service correlation mapping model is proposed for getting correlation QoS values among services automatically. In addition, an effective approach for the correlation-aware optimal service selection is proposed based on a genetic algorithm. A case study indicates that services composition of higher quality can be obtained when such correlations are considered. And the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated via simulation studies.

Correlation-aware QoS modeling and manufacturing cloud service composition

The rapid development of the web has led to a considerable increase in information dissemination. Recently, personalized web service recommendation has become a popular research area in service computing. Research on web service recommendation systems mainly addresses two problems: prediction and completion of sparse QoS data, and the user's personalized recommendation. To address the issue of high data sparsity and low recommendation accuracy in the traditional service recommendation models under mobile cloud, this study presents a hybrid collaborative filtering model for consumer service recommendation based on mobile cloud by introducing user preferences. The example verified that the service recommendation based on the model can effectively reduce the data sparsity and increase the accuracy of the prediction.
