Considering the diversity of point cloud features, the simplification effects of traditional point cloud simplification algorithms (such as curvature, random and isometry simplification algorithms) are poor. To overcome these drawbacks, a point cloud simplification method based on adaptive curvature entropy is proposed. Points with large curvatures are extracted to construct the initial point cloud boundary by defining a given proportion. The point cloud is clustered using the dichotomy clustering method. Subsequently, a preliminary simplification based on an adaptive random algorithm is performed for each clustered point cloud to reduce the point cloud capacity. The curvature entropy of each clustered point cloud is calculated to remove redundant points and preserve feature points so that the simplified point cloud is eventually obtained. The extracted initial point cloud boundary and simplified point cloud constitute the final simplified result. The classic Stanford rabbit model is introduced to verify the effect of the proposed approach. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reflect the details of the point cloud despite a simplification proportion of up to 90%. Compared to traditional curvature simplification algorithms, the proposed method has the lowest deviation and highest accuracy at the same simplicity level, as numerous feature points are preserved, which facilitates the point cloud processing.

Point cloud simplification algorithm based on the feature of adaptive curvature entropy

In the context of 3D mapping, larger and larger point clouds are acquired with lidar sensors. Although pleasing to the eye, dense maps are not necessarily tailored for practical applications. For instance, in a surface inspection scenario, keeping geometric information such as the edges of objects is essential to detect cracks, whereas very dense areas of very little information such as the ground could hinder the main goal of the application. Several strategies exist to address this problem by reducing the number of points. However, they tend to underperform with non-uniform density, large sensor noise, spurious measurements, and large-scale point clouds, which is the case in mobile robotics. This paper presents a novel sampling algorithm based on spectral decomposition analysis to derive local density measures for each geometric primitive. The proposed method, called Spectral Decomposition Filter (SpDF), identifies and preserves geometric information along the topology of point clouds and is able to scale to large environments with a non-uniform density. Finally, qualitative and quantitative experiments verify the feasibility of our method and present a large-scale evaluation of SpDF with other seven point cloud sampling algorithms, in the context of the 3D registration problem using the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm on real-world datasets. Results show that a compression ratio up to 97 % can be achieved when accepting a registration error within the range accuracy of the sensor, here for large scale environments of less than 2 cm.

An adaptive down-sampling method of laser scan data for scan-to-BIM

High-precision and high-density three-dimensional point cloud models usually contain redundant data, which implies extra time and hardware costs in the subsequent data processing stage. To analyze and extract data more effectively, the point cloud must be simplified before data processing. Given that point cloud simplification must be sensitive to features to ensure that more valid information can be saved, in this paper, a new simplification algorithm for scattered point clouds with feature preservation, which can reduce the amount of data while retaining the features of data, is proposed. First, the Delaunay neighborhood of the point cloud is constructed, and then the edge points of the point cloud are extracted by the edge distribution characteristics of the point cloud. Second, the moving least-square method is used to obtain the normal vector of the point cloud and the valley ridge points of the model. Then, potential feature points are identified further and retained on the basis of the discrete gradient idea. Finally, non-feature points are extracted. Experimental results show that our method can be applied to models with different curvatures and effectively avoid the hole phenomenon in the simplification process. To further improve the robustness and anti-noise ability of the method, the neighborhood of the point cloud can be extended to multiple levels, and a balance between simplification speed and accuracy needs to be found.

A New Simplification Algorithm for Scattered Point Clouds with Feature Preservation

High-resolution 3D scanning devices produce high-density point clouds, which require a large capacity of storage and time-consuming processing algorithms. In order to reduce both needs, it is common to apply surface simplification algorithms as a preprocessing stage. The goal of point cloud simplification algorithms is to reduce the volume of data while preserving the most relevant features of the original point cloud. In this paper, we present a new point cloud feature-preserving simplification algorithm. We use a global approach to detect saliencies on a given point cloud. Our method estimates a feature vector for each point in the cloud. The components of the feature vector are the normal vector coordinates, the point coordinates, and the surface curvature at each point. Feature vectors are used as basis signals to carry out a dictionary learning process, producing a trained dictionary. We perform the corresponding sparse coding process to produce a sparse matrix. To detect the saliencies, the proposed method uses two measures, the first of which takes into account the quantity of nonzero elements in each column vector of the sparse matrix and the second the reconstruction error of each signal. These measures are then combined to produce the final saliency value for each point in the cloud. Next, we proceed with the simplification of the point cloud, guided by the detected saliency and using the saliency values of each point as a dynamic clusterization radius. We validate the proposed method by comparing it with a set of state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating the effectiveness of the simplification method.

A Saliency-Based Sparse Representation Method for Point Cloud Simplification.

With the development of 3D scanning technology, a huge volume of point cloud data has been collected at a lower cost. The huge data set is the main burden during the data processing of point clouds, so point cloud simplification is critical. The main aim of point cloud simplification is to reduce data volume while preserving the data features. Therefore, this paper provides a new method for point cloud simplification, named FPPS (feature-preserved point cloud simplification). In FPPS, point cloud simplification entropy is defined, which quantifies features hidden in point clouds. According to simplification entropy, the key points including the majority of the geometric features are selected. Then, based on the natural quadric shape, we introduce a point cloud matching model (PCMM), by which the simplification rules are set. Additionally, the similarity between PCMM and the neighbors of the key points is measured by the shape operator. This represents the criteria for the adaptive simplification parameters in FPPS. Finally, the experiment verifies the feasibility of FPPS and compares FPPS with other four-point cloud simplification algorithms. The results show that FPPS is superior to other simplification algorithms. In addition, FPPS can partially recognize noise.

Feature-Preserved Point Cloud Simplification Based on Natural Quadric Shape Models

—Point clouds captured by depth sensors are often contaminated by noises, obstructing further analysis and applications. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of point distribution uniformity to downstream tasks. We demonstrate that point clouds produced by existing gradient-based denoisers lack uniformity despite having achieved promising quantitative results. To this end, we propose GPCD++, a gradient-based denoiser with an ultra-lightweight network named UniNet to address uniformity. Compared with previous state-of-the-art methods, our approach not only generates competitive or even better denoising results, but also signiﬁcantly improves uniformity which largely beneﬁts applications such as surface reconstruction.
