Structural change in the Brill transition of Nylon m/n (2) conformational disordering as viewed from the temperature-dependent infrared spectral measurements

The preparation of polyamide-6/clay, high-density polyethylene/clay, and high-density polyethylene/ polyamide-6/clay nanocomposites is considered. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) measurements show that the clay enhances the crystallization of the γ-form of polyamide-6. The clay also acts as a nucleation agent and causes a reduction of spherulitte size. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of fracture surfaces shows that the clay reduces the PA-6 particle size in the HDPE/PA-6/clay nanocomposites and changes the morphology. Mechanical properties and the effect of maleated polyethylene are also reported.

An infra-red study of the interaction of polyamides with iodine in iodine—potassium iodide solution

Polarized far‐infrared spectra of aliphatic polyesters [–(CH2)z–CO–O–O]n with z = 1, 2, and 5 (z = 4, nonpolarized) and α‐polyamide (nylon 6 and its N‐deuteroderivative) have been measured in the region up to 80 cm−1. All these polymers have essentially planar zigzag conformations. The normal vibrations of these polymers were calculated for the far‐infrared regions by using the Urey–Bradley force field with some modifications. For the series of polyesters, several far‐infrared bands were found to appear systematically at nearly the same positions with similar intensities. The similarities between these series of bands of the polyesters and those of polyamides were interpreted from the point of view of the normal modes of vibrations.
