Improvement in a laser machining apparatus using, in combination, a machining laser oscillator (101) and a device (110) for supplying auxiliary energy such as a plasma. The invention is characterized in that the auxiliary energy generated by the auxiliary energy supply device is applied to a position on a workpiece (118) at a small distance from a point thereof irradiated by a machining laser beam. In a preferred embodiment, the auxiliary energy supply device (110) is attached to a turntable (113) so that the auxiliary energy is constantly applied to a position on the workpiece preceding the point thereof irradiated by the laser beam, in the direction of the machining progress. Alternatively, the arrangement may be such that the auxiliary energy is applied to the surface of the workpiece opposite to the surface irradiated by the laser beam. Such an arrangement of apparatus makes it possible to improve the machining efficiency and accuracy, and simplify the structure of the apparatus as a whole, resulting in a reduction in the number of machine troubles. In order to further improve the machining efficiency, in a preferred embodiment, the portion being machined may be supplied with abrasive grains, sprayed with high-pressure working liquid, or supplied with working liquid provided with ultrasonic vibrational energy. An automatic mechanism for adjusting the focal point of the laser beam may also be provided.

Arcing faults in electric power systems, such as switchgear, are detected by gathering light from components in the system and splitting the gathered light into two beams. The first beam is passed through a first narrow band filter to extract a wavelength characteristic of arcing in the material of the selected component, such as the copper in the switchgear conductors. The second beam is passed through a second filter having a narrow bandwidth, not including the characteristic wavelength. The extracted light signals are converted to a sensed light electrical signal and a background light electrical signal, respectively, by photodiodes and compared. If the sensed light electrical signal exceeds the background light electrical signal by a selected threshold, an output device such as a trip solenoid is actuated.

PURPOSE:To execute welding with high accuracy and high efficiency by providing a single-Vee groove to base metals to be fillet-welded and irradiating laser beams along the groove faces from both sides of the base metal. CONSTITUTION:The groove having a single Vee section is formed with base metals 1, 2 to be fillet-welded and the base metals are combined. The laser beam 3 fro a laser light source is exactly bisected by a half mirror 7. The laser beam 31 past the half mirror 7 is condensed by a condenser lens 41 and is bent at the same angle as the angle of the single Vee groove by a bent mirror 51 and is irradiated to the groove 8. On the other hand, the laser beam 32 reflected by the mirror 7 is again bent 90 deg. in the optical path and while the beam is condensed by a condenser lens, the beam is irradiated by a bent mirror 52 to the groove 8. The fillet welding is thus executed while the laser beam 3 is irradiated to the groove 8 from both sides of the base metal in the above- mentioned manner.
