The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB), Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), and citrus longhorned beetle (CLB), Anoplophora chinensis (Forster) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), are polyphagous xylophages native to Asia and are capable of killing healthy trees. ALB outbreaks began in China in the 1980s, following major reforestation programs that used ALB-susceptible tree species. No regional CLB outbreaks have been reported in Asia. ALB was first intercepted in international trade in 1992, mostly in wood packaging material; CLB was first intercepted in 1980, mostly in live plants. ALB is now established in North America, and both species are established in Europe. After each infestation was discovered, quarantines and eradication programs were initiated to protect high-risk tree genera such as Acer, Aesculus, Betula, Populus, Salix, and Ulmus. We discuss taxonomy, diagnostics, native range, bionomics, damage, host plants, pest status in their native range, invasion history and management, recent research, and international efforts to prevent new introductions.

Managing Invasive Populations of Asian Longhorned Beetle and Citrus Longhorned Beetle: A Worldwide Perspective

Cold hardiness and diapause are both essential components of winter survival for most insects of the temperate zone. But, in many cases, it is not clear how these two are related. Are they independent events or is cold hardiness a component of the diapause syndrome? Both independence (Lees, 1955; Salt, 1961; Ring, 1972) and dependence (Asahina, 1969; Mansingh, 1971, 1974) of cold hardiness and diapause have been defended vigorously, and indeed evidence for both possibilities can be found in the literature. In this chapter I argue that cold hardiness can be achieved independently of diapause, but cold hardiness is often a component of the diapause syndrome and the expression of diapause frequently extends the insect’s capacity to cold harden.

Relationship between Cold Hardiness and Diapause

Research since 2004 has shown that the use of volatile attractants and pheromones is widespread in the large beetle family Cerambycidae, with pheromones now identified from more than 100 species, and likely pheromones for many more. The pheromones identified to date from species in the subfamilies Cerambycinae, Spondylidinae, and Lamiinae are all male-produced aggregation-sex pheromones that attract both sexes, whereas all known examples for species in the subfamilies Prioninae and Lepturinae are female-produced sex pheromones that attract only males. Here, we summarize the chemistry of the known pheromones, and the optimal methods for their collection, analysis, and synthesis. Attraction of cerambycids to host plant volatiles, interactions between their pheromones and host plant volatiles, and the implications of pheromone chemistry for invasion biology are discussed. We also describe optimized traps, lures, and operational parameters for practical applications of the pheromones in detection, sampling, and management of cerambycids.

Sex and Aggregation-Sex Pheromones of Cerambycid Beetles: Basic Science and Practical Applications.

Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites as chemical barriers against herbivores. Many phytophagous insects are highly adapted to these allelochemicals and use such unique substances as the specific host-finding cues, defensive substances of their own, and even as sex pheromones or their precursors by selectively sensing, incorporating, and/or processing these phytochemicals. Insects also serve as pollinators often effectively guided by specific floral fragrances. This review demonstrates the ecological significance of such plant secondary metabolites in the highly diverse interactions between insects and plants.

Chemical ecology of insect–plant interactions: ecological significance of plant secondary metabolites

The autumn migration of the rice leaf roller moth, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee, in eastern China was studied at two sites (one in southern Jiangsu Province and one in northern Jiangxi Province), using radar and aerial netting. It was confirmed that C. medinalis is a high-altitude nocturnal windborne migrant, with large numbers of moths taking-off at dusk and flying continuously for several hours. Migration was post-teneral and the females had immature ovaries. Maximum densities of the moths typically occurred between 250 and 550 m above ground, and layering was intense on some nights. Moth layers often occurred at an altitude where there was a wind-speed maximum. In early September, migrant C. medinalis from southern Jiangsu Province were carried on the winds in an approximately westward direction. However, the winds prevailing in late September and October took migrants from both sites towards the south-west or south. Forward trajectories for C. medinalis and other insects emigrating from northern Jiangxi during October indicated that they were able to reach the tropical rice-growing areas near the south China coast, where year-round breeding would be possible. Incidental observations on the migratory flight of other lepidopteran pests, including Mythimna separata (Walker), Spodoptera litura (Fabricius), Ctenoplusia agnata (Staudinger) and Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (all Nocturidae), Spoladea recurvalis (Fabricius) and particularly Omiodes indicata (Fabricius) (both Pyralidae) are presented.

Observations of the autumn migration of the rice leaf roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and other moths in eastern China

Mating behavior of the scarab beetle Dasylepida ishigakiensis was observed in a sugar cane field in Miyako Is., Okinawa, Japan. In field observations of tethered females on 6 February 2002, calling behaviors were observed only within 30 min of sunset time (18:25–18:55, JST), when light intensity decreased from ca. 500 lx to 1 lx. Mating was strongly affected by temperature: adults appeared and subsequent mating occurred when the temperature at 18:00 was higher than 18°C. Females appeared from the soil, flew to settle on sugar cane leaves and commenced rhythmical abdominal expansion and contraction. Males were attracted to the calling females from leeward, landed on or near the calling female, and immediately mounted. After genital connection, the male raised his legs and suspended himself with his genitalia. Mating lasted for ca 2 h. Most mated D. ishigakiensis females neither appeared from the soil nor attracted males until the end of March, so are considered monogamous. In contrast, males appeared from the soil after mating on evenings warmer than 18°C and probably repeat mating if females are available.

Mating behavior of the scarab beetle Dasylepida ishigakiensis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

The life history of the white grub Dasylepida sp. was surveyed in a sugarcane field in Miyako Is., Okinawa, Japan. Adult flights were observed from early February to mid-March in 2001. Adults commenced flight just after sunset (at around 18:30) and mated. Sampling from the pots placed in the field on 19 April yielded 41.8% eggs and 58.2% first stadium larvae. Larvae sampled on 20 June, 2000 were found to consist of 33.3% and 66.7% of the first and second stadium larvae, respectively. On 22 August, 87.5% of larvae were second stadium and the remainder (12.5%) were third stadium larvae. The proportion of third stadium larvae increased and attained 100% by 30 November. In an excavation survey on 26 November, 2001, 11 adults (three females and eight males) and five pupae were found in the soil at a depth of around 45 cm. Pupae were found in the tunnel cavities. We believe that adults remain in the tunnels until the next February. In the rearing experiments at 25°C in the laboratory, the egg period was 23.6 d and the larval periods of the first, second and third stadia were 80.9, 91.8 and 335.8 d, respectively. These facts indicated that Dasylepida sp. has a two-year life cycle.

Life history of the white grub Dasylepida sp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), a new and severe pest on sugarcane on the Miyako Islands, Okinawa

Chemical components that attract males in the laboratory were extracted from the female elytra of the white-spotted longicorn beetle, Anoplophora malasiaca (Thomson) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), and found to be comprised of several sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Males located females that had fed on the bark of the host plant Citrus unshiu more frequently than those fed on an artificial diet in the laboratory. Male attraction was also confirmed in the corresponding sesquiterpene fractions of the host plant. The sesquiterpene fractions of female elytra and C. unshiu leaves showed quite similar GC profiles. In the field, the beetles were found on C. unshiu trees baited with intact females or males as frequently as those baited with the leaf extracts containing the sesquiterpenes at different purification levels. The beetles were found on those baited trees significantly more frequently than on unbaited control trees. Males, as well as females attracted both sexes, and the male elytra also contained the sesquiterpenes that were identical with those in female and C. unshiu. This indicated that active components in the elytra are acquired from C. unshiu by feeding, contact and/or adsorption. These sesquiterpenes may serve for intraspecific communication in A. malasiaca. The major sesquiterpenes from the C. unshiu leaves were isolated and elucidated by NMR analyses of four sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, β-elemene, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, and α-farnesene.

Correlation between Migratory Flight of Rice Planthoppers and the Low-Level Jet Stream in Kyushu, Southwestern Japan

Host-use pattern for overwintering and reproduction of the ragweed beetle, Ophraella communa LeSage, was examined in Tsukuba, Japan. Many adults of both sexes were found overwintering inside the rolled parts of dead leaves of Xanthium canadense in November. These adults had already accumulated triacylglycerol as energy reserves, and were able to survive the winter and to reproduce in the spring. No eggs and larvae were found on X. canadense throughout the observation period, although overwintered adults were temporarily found in May. In contrast, reproduction occurs on Ambrosia artemisiifolia and A. trifida in late April. These results suggest that O. communa adults mainly use dead leaves of X. canadense as an overwintering shelter in Tsukuba, while they reproduce only on A. artemisiifolia and A. trifida in the spring. Such a seasonal migration between host plants may be important for the survival strategy.
