: Network Centric Warfare (NCW) and swarming have become very important operational terms parallel to the improvements in wireless network technologies. These relatively new concepts are being widely used in many operational applications. The main purpose of this research effort is to examine the metrics of NCW, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms in electronic attack (EA) missions. UAVs have already been used in many military operations. Swarming a number of small UAVs in a distributed beamforming approach to have the desired operational effect is the current popular research area. Distributed beamforming and swarm behavior of self-synchronized autonomous UAVs are investigated in this study. Two simulation scenarios were created and implemented to show the effectiveness of EA against radars and wireless communication links. In reality, EA against a single node in a network, such as a radar or communication link, is unlikely to be successful by itself, however simulation results showed that the decision making process of the enemy network and OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) cycle is directly vulnerable to jamming.

Net-centric Controlled Distributed Stand-in-Jamming using UAVs-Transmission Losses and Range Limitations Due to Geo-localization Problem Over Turkish Geography

: The LPISimNet software tool provides the capability to quantify the performance of sensor network configurations by combining the information and physical domains. To combine the sensor network s performance in a coherent context with a decision-maker, Boyd's observe, orient, decide, act (OODA) loop is included along with its operational tempo. This thesis develops a new version of LPISimNet (LPISimNet(V)3) by correcting a code error and including a network comparison file. Additionally, this thesis evaluates the effects of different network configurations and size on the maximum operational tempo. Simulation results for a static network indicate that as the network size increases the rate at which decisions can be made declines. A prediction for further decline is presented based on the simulations. Also, dynamic network simulation results for a three-, four-, five-, and six-node network display the importance of node placement and network geometry to help offset network degradation due to range fluctuation between nodes. By surrounding the dynamic nodes of the network with static nodes, the maximum operational tempo can be bounded between an upper and lower limit, stabilizing the decision-making speed. Finally, the effect of electronic attack on the operational tempo is presented to display the robustness of a network.

Assessing the Effects of Multi-Node Sensor Network Configurations on the Operational Tempo

: Engineering of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) requires one to take a holistic approach that includes the physical modeling and analysis of the missile defense operating environment, development of metrics and techniques to analyze the communication requirements of the net-centric Ballistic Missile Defense warfare, and the use of architectural patterns and other software technologies to shape the emergent behavior of the BMDS taking into account of the system's interoperability, composability, extensibility, and dynamic reconfigurability. This report summarizes the work in FY07 to investigate new technologies to support the development of the BMDS. We developed new scoring functions for the fusion of sensor data, an algorithm for multiple hypothesis tracking, a distributed medium access control protocol and data dissemination algorithm for wireless networks of cooperative radar systems, simulation models for network-centric electronic warfare metrics study and for the prediction of the over the horizon radar system footprints, technologies for the correct specification and validation of temporal behaviors in a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) based system-of-systems, runtime verification of system-level requirements of distributed reactive systems using MSC-Assertions, and safety assurance of reconfigurable and self-reconfigurable systems. We also evaluated the effectiveness of the real-time Java technology for BMDS software and the potential impact of integrating the Air Force YAL-1A Attack Laser into the BMDS.

System requirements analysis and technological support for the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS): FY07 progress report

: This thesis explores information network metrics, the concept of netted radar, and network theory in a network-centric warfare environment. It begins with a discussion of the relationship between the network space and the battlespace. MATLAB simulations are developed to demonstrate the concepts and quantify the network metrics discussed for important information and netted radar configurations. The effect of electronic attack is also addressed. Simulation results to demonstrate the signal-to-noise ratio performance with and without network synchronization are shown, including the degradation due to electronic attack.
