Display screen or portion thereof with graphical user interface

An intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions. The system can be implemented using any of a number of different platforms, such as the web, email, smartphone, and the like, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the system is based on sets of interrelated domains and tasks, and employs additional functionally powered by external services with which the system can interact.

Intelligent Automated Assistant

Methods and apparatus are described for detecting social relationships across multiple networks and/or communication channels. These social relationships may then be utilized in a wide variety of ways to support and enhance a broad range of user services.

Identifying and employing social network relationships

The proliferation of web-based social networks has lead to new innovations in social networking, particularly by allowing users to describe their relationships beyond a basic connection. In this dissertation, I look specifically at trust in web-based social networks, how it can be computed, and how it can be used in applications. I begin with a definition of trust and a description of several properties that affect how it is used in algorithms. This is complemented by a survey of web-based social networks to gain an understanding of their scope, the types of relationship information available, and the current state of trust. 
The computational problem of trust is to determine how much one person in the network should trust another person to whom they are not connected. I present two sets of algorithms for calculating these trust inferences: one for networks with binary trust ratings, and one for continuous ratings. For each rating scheme, the algorithms are built upon the defined notions of trust. Each is then analyzed theoretically and with respect to simulated and actual trust networks to determine how accurately they calculate the opinions of people in the system. I show that in both rating schemes the algorithms presented can be expected to be quite accurate. 
These calculations are then put to use in two applications. FilmTrust is a website that combines trust, social networks, and movie ratings and reviews. Trust is used to personalize the website for each user, displaying recommended movie ratings, and ordering reviews by relevance. I show that, in the case where the user's opinion is divergent from the average, the trust-based recommended ratings are more accurate than several other common collaborative filtering techniques. The second application is TrustMail, an email client that uses the trust rating of each sender as a score for the message. Users can then sort messages according to their trust value. 
I conclude with a description of other applications where trust inferences can be used, and how the lessons from this dissertation can be applied to infer information about relationships in other complex systems.

Computing and applying trust in web-based social networks

In some embodiments, a method of allowing navigation of a plurality of data elements residing within a category-tree database includes providing, on a single primary “web” page, a distinct data element symbol for each data element and a distinct parent category symbol for each parent category in the category paths of the data elements. For each illustrated parent category, a distinct first level web page is provided that includes (i) a first level subcategory symbol for each first level subcategory in the category paths of the data element(s) associated with that parent category and (ii) the data element symbol for each such data element shown associated with its respective first level subcategory symbol.

Apparatus and methods for organizing and/or presenting data

The present invention (100) provides synchronous media playback (403) and messaging (505) between a host user (101) and at least one guest user (103, 105). The host user wishes to initiate a playback session in which the host user and guest users view a presentation that corresponds to a media file (701) that is locally stored on each of the user's terminals (913). In order to initiate the playback session, the host user invites the guest users (301). If a guest user wishes to participate in the playback session, the guest user accepts the invitation (305). When the host user determines that the session should begin, based upon the acceptances from the guest users (311), the host user initiates the playback of the media file that is locally stored at each terminal (403). The present invention also supports playback actions that may occur during the playback session (501). The host user can terminate the playback session (601), and any of the guest users can withdraw during the playback session.

Synchronous media playback and messaging system

Methods and apparatuses are provided for facilitating task switching. A method may include detecting activation of a second display on a multi-display computing apparatus including a first and second display. The first display may be in an active state prior to activation of the second display. The method may further include causing a task selection interface to be displayed in response to the detected activation. Corresponding apparatuses are also provided.

Methods and apparatuses for facilitating task switching

The invention provides a presentation of contextual information to a digital device in relation to a period of time. As such the invention provides for efficient user access to historical, as well as, current and future or forecasted contextual information. In addition, the present invention provides for current contextual information to be presented in an idle mode view, a scrolling bar mode view or another inconspicuous view. Additionally the present invention provides a novel means of using context information to create multimedia file presentations; image or video file presentations that can be associated with previous periods of time, locations or other context data.

Context diary application for a mobile terminal

This paper describes a qualitative user study of mobile phone TV usage undertaken during September 2005 and centered on the real world Mobile TV usage of paying subscribers of live Mobile TV service in Seoul, South Korea. The study identified four primary use cases: at home; during the evening commute (both likely to be significantly culturally dependent); macro-breaks; and secret use. Barriers to use include: battery life; screen size; lack of compelling content; poor coverage and design implications are discussed. The study suggests that if the current barriers to use can be overcome Mobile TV is a viable competitor to existing forms of entertainment and media consumption. Actual usage suggests that Personal TV is a more accurate description for this kind of service than Mobile TV.

Personal TV: a qualitative study of mobile TV users

Systems and methods whereby a user can learn of users with whom she is socially-related. For example a user might learn of users with whom she shares common acquaintances and/or with whom she shares having met various individuals. Further, systems and methods whereby a user can learn, for a specified user, if she and that specified user are socially-related. Through such queries, the user might also learn of the identities of the common acquaintances and/or commonly-met individuals. Additionally, systems and methods whereby access to data stored on a machine associated with a user, such as the user's terminal, may be controlled, and systems and methods whereby a terminal user can learn if she is in the proximity of people that she had previously met. Also, systems and methods whereby a user can receive various socially-relevant recommendations, and systems and methods that allow for the execution of scripts.
