Computer-aided analysis of electronic circuits: Algorithms and computational techniques

Two generic classes of chaotic oscillators comprising four different configurations are constructed. The proposed structures are based on the simplest possible abstract models of generic second-order RC sinusoidal oscillators that satisfy the basic condition for oscillation and the frequency of oscillation formulas. By linking these sinusoidal oscillator engines to simple passive first-order or second-order nonlinear composites, chaos is generated and the evolution of the two-dimensional sinusoidal oscillator dynamics into a higher dimensional state space is clearly recognized. We further discuss three architectures into which autonomous chaotic oscillators can be decomposed. Based on one of these architectures we classify a large number of the available chaotic oscillators and propose a novel reconstruction of the classical Chua's circuit. The well-known Lorenz system of equations is also studied and a simplified model with equivalent dynamics, but containing no multipliers, is introduced.

Construction of classes of circuit-independent chaotic oscillators using passive-only nonlinear devices

For Pt. I see ibid., vol. 40, no. 10, p. 640, 1993. Linear system-theory provides an inadequate characterization of sustained oscillation in nature. This two-part exposition of oscillation in piecewise-linear dynamical systems, guides the reader from linear concepts and simple harmonic motion to nonlinear concepts and chaos. By means of three worked examples, the authors bridge the gap from the familiar parallel RLC network to exotic nonlinear dynamical phenomena in Chua's circuit. The goal is to stimulate the reader to think deeply about the fundamental nature of oscillation and to develop intuition into the chaos-producing mechanisms of nonlinear dynamics. In order to exhibit chaos, an autonomous circuit consisting of resistors, capacitors, and inductors must contain (1) at least one nonlinear element, (2) at least one locally active resistor, and (3) at least three energy-storage elements. Chua's circuit is the simplest electronic circuit that satisfies these criteria. In addition, this remarkable circuit is the only physical system for which the presence of chaos has been proved mathematically. The circuit is readily constructed at low cost using standard electronic components and exhibits a rich variety of bifurcations and chaos. Theoretical and numerical analysis of differential-algebraic equations

A number of important commercial applications would benefit from the introduction of easily manufactured devices that exhibit current-controlled, or “S-type,” negative differential resistance (NDR). A leading example is emerging non-volatile memory based on crossbar array architectures. Due to the inherently linear current vs. voltage characteristics of candidate non-volatile memristor memory elements, individual memory cells in these crossbar arrays can be addressed only if a highly non-linear circuit element, termed a “selector,” is incorporated in the cell. Selectors based on a layer of niobium oxide sandwiched between two electrodes have been investigated by a number of groups because the NDR they exhibit provides a promisingly large non-linearity. We have developed a highly accurate compact dynamical model for their electrical conduction that shows that the NDR in these devices results from a thermal feedback mechanism. A series of electrothermal measurements and numerical simulations corroborate this model. These results reveal that the leakage currents can be minimized by thermally isolating the selector or by incorporating materials with larger activation energies for electron motion.

An accurate locally active memristor model for S-type negative differential resistance in NbOx

A systematic method is given for generating negative-resistance circuits made of 2 transistors and linear positive resistors only. The 2 transistors may be bioolar ( n-p-n or p-n-p ), JFET ( n -channel or p-channel), MOSFET ( n -channel or p -channel), or their combinations. Since the circuits do not require an internal power supply, they are passive and can be integrated as a two-terminal device in monolithic form. Two algorithms are given for generating a negative-resistance device which exhibits either a type- N \upsilon - i characteristic similar to that of a tunnel diode, or a type- S \upsilon -i characteristic similar to that of a four-layered p-n-p-n diode. Hundreds of new and potentially useful negative resistance devices have been discovered. A selected catalog of many such prototype negative-resistance devices is included for future applications.

Bipolar - JFET - MOSFET negative resistance devices

Two-terminal devices which exhibit a type-S (current-controlled) or type-N (voltage-controlled) negative differential resistance can be built using only two bipolar transistors and linear positive resistors without any internal biasing power supply. Two general algorithms are presented in this paper for systematically generating all such devices. Hundreds of negative resistance devices have been derived to date using these algorithms and a selection of these circuits is presented in this paper along with their computer-simulated v-i curves. Laboratory measurements of a few sample circuits agree remarkably well with the computer-simulated results.
