The ever‐increasing energy density requirements in electric vehicles (EVs) have boosted the development of Ni‐rich layered oxide cathodes for state‐of‐the‐art lithium‐ion batteries. Nevertheless, the commercialization of polycrystalline Ni‐rich cathodes (PCNCs) is hindered by the severe performance degradation and safety concerns that are tightly related to its particle cracking during cycling. Single‐crystalline Ni‐rich cathodes (SCNCs) with eliminated grain boundaries and high mechanical strength have recently attracted extensive attention owing to their superior structural and cycling stability, which present high crack resistance during electrochemical operation. Various articles have focused on the trial‐and‐error synthesis and modifications of SCNCs, as well as the comparison of performances and mechanisms with PCNCs. However, there has been much less effort in systematic analysis and summary to reveal their key challenges, controversies, and the corresponding primary causes. In this review, the advantages and debates in structural and electrochemical properties of SCNCs over PCNCs are summarized to provide fundamental understanding of SCNCs. Then the current practical issues and challenges are comprehensively discussed from the viewpoints of both academia and industry, as well as the proposed modification strategies and underlying mechanisms for SCNCs. The outlook and perspectives are further given to facilitate the commercial applications of SCNCs in high‐performance EVs.

A Comparison between Unilateral Transverse Process-Pedicle and Bilateral Puncture Techniques in Percutaneous Kyphoplasty

Aim. Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is a routine operation for the treatment of vertebral compression fracture (VCF). Both local anesthesia and general anesthesia are widely used for PKP. However, which type of anesthesia is better for PKP still remains uncertain. This study aimed to find out whether local anesthesia or general anesthesia is more suitable for PKP. Methods. This is a retrospective clinical trial. A total of 85 single-level VCF patients who received PKP 12 months ago were recruited in this study. 45 patients who received local anesthesia were in group L, and 40 patients with general anesthesia were in group G. Clinical, radiological, and economic data between the two groups were collected. Results. No difference was found on preoperative data between the two groups. The duration of operation time in group L was longer than that in group G. Within 12 months after PKP, more complications happened in group G than those in group L. Results. This study found that there was no difference between group L and group G before the operation in terms of baseline. The operation time in group L was shorter than that in group G and the difference was significant. The VAS pain score in group L was significantly higher than that in group G. Clinical and radiological indicators were all improved after surgery, while no other difference was detected between the two groups. More severe complications happened in group G within 12 months after PKP, and the cost in group L was significantly less than that in group G. Conclusion. Both local anesthesia and general anesthesia were reliable for PKP. However, local anesthesia was more efficient and safer with less expense and more bearable pain when compared with general anesthesia.

Analysis of Anesthesia Methods in Percutaneous Kyphoplasty for Treatment of Vertebral Compression Fractures

There has been increasing demand for high-energy density and long-cycle life rechargeable batteries to satisfy the ever-growing requirements for next-generation energy storage systems. Among all available candidates, dual-ion batteries (DIBs) have drawn tremendous attention in the past few years from both academic and industrial battery communities because of their fascinating advantages of high working voltage, excellent safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the dynamic imbalance between the electrodes and the mismatch of traditional electrolyte systems remain elusive. To fully employ the advantages of DIBs, the overall optimization of anode materials, cathode materials, and compatible electrolyte systems is urgently needed. Here, we review the development history and the reaction mechanisms involved in DIBs. Afterward, the optimization strategies toward DIB materials and electrolytes are highlighted. In addition, their energy-related applications are also provided. Lastly, the research challenges and possible development directions of DIBs are outlined.

Focus on the Electroplating Chemistry of Li Ions in Nonaqueous Liquid Electrolytes: Toward Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are widely considered the essential components for upcoming rechargeable lithium-ion batteries owing to the potential for great safety and energy density. Among them, polymer solid-state electrolytes (PSEs) are competitive candidates for replacing commercial liquid electrolytes due to their flexibility, shape versatility and easy machinability. Despite the rapid development of PSEs, their practical application still faces obstacles including poor ionic conductivity, narrow electrochemical stable window and inferior mechanical strength. Polymer/inorganic composite electrolytes (PIEs) formed by adding ceramic fillers in PSEs merge the benefits of PSEs and inorganic solid-state electrolytes (ISEs), exhibiting appreciable comprehensive properties due to the abundant interfaces with unique characteristics. Some PIEs are highly compatible with high-voltage cathode and lithium metal anode, which offer desirable access to obtaining lithium metal batteries with high energy density. This review elucidates the current issues and recent advances in PIEs. The performance of PIEs was remarkably influenced by the characteristics of the fillers including type, content, morphology, arrangement and surface groups. We focus on the molecular interaction between different components in the composite environment for designing high-performance PIEs. Finally, the obstacles and opportunities for creating high-performance PIEs are outlined. This review aims to provide some theoretical guidance and direction for the development of PIEs.

Tailoring Practically Accessible Polymer/Inorganic Composite Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries: A Review

Lithium‐ion batteries are taking center stage in the environmental revolution through the ever‐growing adoption of electric vehicles. However, safety issues derived from battery thermal runaway remain a prominent challenge. In this work, a bi‐continuous separator (Bi‐Sep) via micro‐gravure and phase inversion techniques is developed. The proposed nonshrinkage separator exhibits a nanoporous morphology and a super‐stretchable property, thus effectively blocking both internal short circuits and chemical crosstalk between electrodes at thermal abusive temperatures. Besides its considerable performance at normal conditions, the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/graphite pouch cell assembled with the Bi‐Sep separator presents superior sustainability at an elevated temperature of 60 °C. Moreover, the cell using this Bi‐Sep separator achieves an extremely high level of survivability under thermal abusive conditions. This work concludes that engineering the porous structure and thermomechanical properties of a separator, rather than simply improving its heat‐resistance, is of significant importance for the development of safe batteries.

Boosting Battery Safety by Mitigating Thermal‐Induced Crosstalk with a Bi‐Continuous Separator

BACKGROUND Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) has been widely used to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Bilateral percutaneous punctures are always performed to access the fractured vertebrae. However, the procedure has expensive clinical costs, especially the cost for the device, which creates a heavy financial burden for patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from 49 patients who have single-level non-neoplastic vertebral compression fracture (VCF) were collected for 12 months after treated by PKP, including 21 cases that used bilateral puncture with single balloon (S group) and 28 cases that used bilateral puncture with double balloon (D group). We assessed the clinical (visual analogue scale, VAS) and radiological (vertebral height and kyphotic angle, KA) outcomes. Cost data (gross medical cost, cost for the device and cost for drugs) were obtained from the medical bill of each patient. RESULTS Baseline patient variables were similar between the two groups except the compensation (S group <D group). No severe cement leakage and only one adjacent-level fracture were observed during the follow-ups. Each group showed significant improvements in the VAS, anterior height (AH) of vertebral body and KA after PKP, while no significant differences were observed when the VAS, vertebral height, and KA at the same time were compared between the S group and the D group. Costs in the S group were significantly lower than those in the D group. CONCLUSIONS Both single balloon and double balloon bilateral puncture PKP are relatively safe and efficient in non-neoplastic VCFs. However, reuse of the balloon in PKP can decrease the costs.
