Carbon nanotube–polymer composites: Chemistry, processing, mechanical and electrical properties

This review analyses the literature from the early 1990s until the beginning of 2003 and covers the use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanofibers as catalysts and catalysts supports. The article is composed of three sections, the first one explains why these materials can be suitable for these applications, the second describes the different preparation methods for supporting metallic catalysts on these supports, and the last one details the catalytic results obtained with nanotubes or nanofibers based catalysts. When possible, the results were compared to those obtained on classical carbonaceous supports and explanations are proposed to clarify the different behaviors observed.

Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers in catalysis

Since their discovery, carbon nanotubes have attracted the attention of many a scientist around the world. This extraordinary interest stems from their outstanding structural, mechanical, and electronic properties. In fact, apart from being the best and most easily available one-dimensional (1D) model system, carbon nanotubes show strong application potential in electronics, scanning probe microscopy, chemical and biological sensing, reinforced composite materials, and in many more areas. While some of the proposed applications remain still a far-off dream, others are close to technical realization. Recent advances in the development of reliable methods for the chemical functionalization of the nanotubes provide an additional impetus towards extending the scope of their application spectrum. In particular, covalent modification schemes allow persistent alteration of the electronic properties of the tubes, as well as to chemically tailor their surface properties, whereby new functions can be implemented that cannot otherwise be acquired by pristine nanotubes.

Polymer nanocomposites based on functionalized carbon nanotubes

Polystyrene and poly[(tert-butyl acrylate)-b-styrene] with well-defined molecular weights and polydispersities were prepared by nitroxide-mediated free-radical polymerization. The homopolymers and block copolymers were used to functionalize shortened single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) through a radical coupling reaction involving polymer-centered radicals generated at 125 °C via loss of the stable free-radical nitroxide capping agent. The resulting polymer−SWNT composites were fully characterized and were found to be highly soluble in a variety of organic solvents. This solubility could also be altered through chemical modification of the appended polymers. The tert-butyl groups of appended poly[(tert-butyl acrylate)-b-styrene] could be removed to produce poly[(acrylic acid)-b-styrene]-functionalized carbon nanotubes. The resulting composite was found to form aggregates in a mixture of chloroform/methanol (v/v:  1/1) as determined by dynamic light scattering.

Functionalization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Well-Defined Polymers by Radical Coupling

Single-walled carbon nanotubes were oxidatively shortened and functionalized with ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalysts. These catalyst-functionalized nanotubes were shown to be effective in the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene, resulting in rapid polymerization from the catalyst sites on the nanotube. It was found that high polymer molecular weights could be reached, and the molecular weight increased linearly with polymerization time. The resulting polynorbornene-functionalized nanotubes were found to exhibit solubility in organic solvents, whereas the starting materials and catalyst-functionalized nanotubes were completely insoluble. The polymerized materials were characterized by NMR, IR, DSC, AFM, and TEM.
