Deep learning describes a class of machine learning algorithms that are capable of combining raw inputs into layers of intermediate features. These algorithms have recently shown impressive results across a variety of domains. Biology and medicine are data-rich disciplines, but the data are complex and often ill-understood. Hence, deep learning techniques may be particularly well suited to solve problems of these fields. We examine applications of deep learning to a variety of biomedical problems-patient classification, fundamental biological processes and treatment of patients-and discuss whether deep learning will be able to transform these tasks or if the biomedical sphere poses unique challenges. Following from an extensive literature review, we find that deep learning has yet to revolutionize biomedicine or definitively resolve any of the most pressing challenges in the field, but promising advances have been made on the prior state of the art. Even though improvements over previous baselines have been modest in general, the recent progress indicates that deep learning methods will provide valuable means for speeding up or aiding human investigation. Though progress has been made linking a specific neural network's prediction to input features, understanding how users should interpret these models to make testable hypotheses about the system under study remains an open challenge. Furthermore, the limited amount of labelled data for training presents problems in some domains, as do legal and privacy constraints on work with sensitive health records. Nonetheless, we foresee deep learning enabling changes at both bench and bedside with the potential to transform several areas of biology and medicine.

Opportunities and obstacles for deep learning in biology and medicine.

With the growing volume of online information, recommender systems have been an effective strategy to overcome information overload. The utility of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given their widespread adoption in many web applications, along with their potential impact to ameliorate many problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also to the attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems research. The field of deep learning in recommender system is flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent research efforts on deep learning-based recommender systems. More concretely, we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning-based recommendation models, along with a comprehensive summary of the state of the art. Finally, we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new and exciting development of the field.

Deep Learning Based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives

Communications of the ACM (CACM for short, not the best sounding acronym around) is the ACM’s flagship magazine. Started in 1957, CACM is handy for keeping up to date on current research being carried out across all topics of computer science and realworld applications. CACM has had an illustrious past with many influential pieces of work and debates started within its pages. In addition to the print edition, which is released monthly, there is a fantastic website (http://cacm.acm. org/) that showcases not only the most recent edition but all previous CACM articles as well, readable online as well as downloadable as a PDF. In addition, the website lets you browse for articles by subject, a handy feature if you want to focus on a particular topic. CACM is really essential reading. Pretty much guaranteed to contain content that is interesting to anyone, it keeps tabs on the latest in computer science. Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives.

Currently collaborative filtering is widely used in recommender systems. With the development of idea of deep learning, a lot of researches have been conducted to improve collaborative filtering by integrating deep learning techniques. In this research, we proposed an autoencoder based collaborative filtering method, in which pretraining and stacking mechanism is provided. The experimental study on commonly used MovieLens datasets have shown its potential and effectiveness in getting higher recall.

Community-based Question Answering (CQA) has become popular in knowledge sharing sites since it allows users to get answers to complex, detailed, and personal questions directly from other users. Large archives of historical questions and associated answers have been accumulated. Retrieving relevant historical answers that best match a question is an essential component of a CQA service. Most state of the art approaches are based on bag-of-words models, which have been proven successful in a range of text matching tasks, but are insufficient for capturing the important word sequence information in short text matching. In this paper, a new architecture is proposed to more effectively model the complicated matching relations between questions and answers. It utilises a similarity matrix which contains both lexical and sequential information. Afterwards the information is put into a deep architecture to find potentially suitable answers. The experimental study shows its potential in improving matching accuracy of question and answer.

Question/Answer matching for CQA system via combining lexical and sequential information

Emotion cause extraction is one of the most important applications in natural language processing tasks. It is a difficult challenge due to the complex semantic information between emotion description and the whole document. Previous approaches have revealed that clause is an important indicator of emotion-cause extraction. As such, selecting a suitable clause has become an interesting challenge. Different from existed clause selection methods which mainly focus on semantic similarity between clause and emotion description, in this paper, we proposed a hierarchical network-based clause selection framework in which the similarity is calculated by considering document features from word’s position, different semantic levels (word and phrase), and interaction among clauses, respectively. Experimental study on a Chinese emotion-cause corpus has shown the proposed framework’s effectiveness and the potential of integrating different level’s information.

Multiple Level Hierarchical Network-Based Clause Selection for Emotion Cause Extraction

Molecular events normally have significant meanings since they describe important biological interactions or alternations such as binding of a protein. As a crucial step of biological event extraction, event trigger identification has attracted much attention and many methods have been proposed. Traditionally those methods can be categorised into rule-based approach and machine learning approach and machine learning-based approaches have demonstrated its potential and outperformed rule-based approaches in many situations. However, machine learning-based approaches still face several challenges among which a notable one is how to model semantic and syntactic information of different words and incorporate it into the prediction model. There exist many ways to model semantic and syntactic information, among which word embedding is an effective one. Therefore, in order to address this challenge, in this study, a word embedding assisted neural network prediction model is proposed to conduct event trigger identification. The experimental study on commonly used dataset has shown its potential. It is believed that this study could offer researchers insights into semantic-aware solutions for event trigger identification.

Embedding assisted prediction architecture for event trigger identification.

The RFID is not only a feasible, novel, and cost-effective candidate for daily object identification but it is also considered as a significant tool to provide traceable visibility along different stages of the aviation supply chain. In the air baggage handing application, the RFID tags are used to enhance the ability for baggage tracking, dispatching and conveyance so as to improve the management efficiency and the users' satisfaction. We surveyed current related work and introduce the IATA RP1740c protocol used for the standard to recognize the baggage tags. One distributed aviation baggage traceable application is designed based on the RFID networks. We describe the RFID-based baggage tracking experiment in the BCIA (Beijing Capital International Airport). In this experiment the tags are sealed in the printed baggage label and the RFID readers are fixed in the certain interested positions of the BHS in the Terminal 2. We measure the accurate recognition rate and monitor the baggage's real-time situation on the monitor's screen. Through the analysis of the measured results within two months we emphasize the advantage of the adoption of RFID tags in this high noisy BHS environment. The economical benefits achieved by the extensive deployment of RFID in the baggage handing system are also outlined.
