Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) has a one-dimensional (1D) crystal structure comprising of covalently bonded (Sb4Se6)n ribbons stacking together through van der Waals force. This special structure results in anisotropic optical and electrical properties. Currently, the photovoltaic device performance is dominated by the grain orientation in the Sb2Se3 thin film absorbers. Effective approaches to enhance the carrier collection and overall power-conversion efficiency are urgently required. Here, we report the construction of Sb2Se3 solar cells with high-quality Sb2Se3 nanorod arrays absorber along the [001] direction, which is beneficial for sun-light absorption and charge carrier extraction. An efficiency of 9.2%, which is the highest value reported so far for this type of solar cells, is achieved by junction interface engineering. Our cell design provides an approach to further improve the efficiency of Sb2Se3-based solar cells.

9.2%-efficient core-shell structured antimony selenide nanorod array solar cells

Sb2Se3, a binary compound containing non-toxic and Earth-abundant constituents, is a promising absorber material for low-cost, high-efficiency photovoltaics. Current Sb2Se3 thin-film solar cells use toxic CdS as the buffer layer and suffer from unsatisfactory stability. Here we selected ZnO as the buffer layer and constructed superstrate Sb2Se3 solar cells with a certified power conversion efficiency of 5.93%. Randomly oriented ZnO produced by spray pyrolysis induced the growth of Sb2Se3 with preferred [221] orientation, and hence resulted in devices with fewer interfacial defects and better efficiency. Moreover, our unencapsulated device survived the stringent damp-heat (85 ∘C, 85% humidity, 1,100 h), light-soaking (50 ∘C, 1.3 sun, 1,100 h), thermal cycling, and ultraviolet preconditioning tests. The combined features of stability, Earth-abundant constituent and potentially low-cost manufacturing highlight the great potential of Sb2Se3 solar cell as a possible non-toxic alternative to CdTe photovoltaics. Thin-film photovoltaic devices are often based on toxic or rare materials. Here, Wang et al. grow oriented Sb2Se3 thin film on a ZnO buffer layer, and fabricate solar cells with a certified 5.9% conversion efficiency and which pass harsh stability tests under humidity, heat and illumination.

Stable 6%-efficient Sb 2 Se 3 solar cells with a ZnO buffer layer

Antimony selenide is an emerging promising thin film photovoltaic material thanks to its binary composition, suitable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, inert grain boundaries and earth-abundant constituents. However, current devices produced from rapid thermal evaporation strategy suffer from low-quality film and unsatisfactory performance. Herein, we develop a vapor transport deposition technique to fabricate antimony selenide films, a technique that enables continuous and low-cost manufacturing of cadmium telluride solar cells. We improve the crystallinity of antimony selenide films and then successfully produce superstrate cadmium sulfide/antimony selenide solar cells with a certified power conversion efficiency of 7.6%, a net 2% improvement over previous 5.6% record of the same device configuration. We analyze the deep defects in antimony selenide solar cells, and find that the density of the dominant deep defects is reduced by one order of magnitude using vapor transport deposition process.

Beyond methylammonium lead iodide: prospects for the emergent field of ns2 containing solar absorbers

To accelerate the deployment of hydrogen produced by renewable solar energy, several technologies have been competitively developed, including photoelectrochemical (PEC), photocatalytic, and photovoltaic-electrolysis routes. In this review, we place PEC in context with these competing technologies and highlight key advantages of PEC systems. After defining the unique performance metrics of the PEC water splitting system, recently developed strategies for enhancing each performance metric, such as the photocurrent density, photovoltage, fill factor, and stability are surveyed in conjunction with the relevant theoretical aspects. In addition, various advanced characterization methods are discussed, including recently developed in situ techniques, allowing us to understand not only the basic properties of materials but also diverse photophysical phenomena underlying the PEC system. Based on the insights gained from these advanced characterization techniques, we not only provide a resource for researchers in the field as well as those who want to join the field, but also offer an outlook of how thin film-based PEC studies could lead to commercially viable water splitting systems.

Strategies for enhancing the photocurrent, photovoltage, and stability of photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Solar cells based on inorganic absorbers, such as Si, GaAs, CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se2, permit a high device efficiency and stability. The crystals’ three-dimensional structure means that dangling bonds inevitably exist at the grain boundaries (GBs), which significantly degrades the device performance via recombination losses. Thus, the growth of single-crystalline materials or the passivation of defects at the GBs is required to address this problem, which introduces an added processing complexity and cost. Here we report that antimony selenide (Sb2Se3)—a simple, non-toxic and low-cost material with an optimal solar bandgap of ∼1.1 eV—exhibits intrinsically benign GBs because of its one-dimensional crystal structure. Using a simple and fast (∼1 μm min–1) rapid thermal evaporation process, we oriented crystal growth perpendicular to the substrate, and produced Sb2Se3 thin-film solar cells with a certified device efficiency of 5.6%. Our results suggest that the family of one-dimensional crystals, including Sb2Se3, SbSeI and Bi2S3, show promise in photovoltaic applications. Materials with a one-dimensional crystal structure, such as antimony selenide, show considerable potential for making efficient thin-film solar cells.
