Ferroelectrics are essential components in a wide range of applications, including ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators. In the single crystal form, relaxor-PbTiO3 (PT) piezoelectric materials have been extensively studied due to their ultrahigh piezoelectric and electromechanical properties. In this article, a perspective and future development of relaxor-PT crystals are given. Initially, various techniques for the growth of relaxor-PT crystals are reviewed, with crystals up to 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length being readily achievable using the Bridgman technique. Second, the characterizations of dielectric and electromechanical properties are surveyed. Boundary conditions, including temperature, electric field, and stress, are discussed in relation to device limitations. High performance ferroelectric relaxor-PbTiO3 single crystals: Status and perspective

Dielectric relaxation and polar structures of BaTi1−xSnxO3 ceramics, x=0.10–0.20, are investigated by means of dielectric spectroscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy. A transition regime between “normal” ferroelectric and relaxor behaviors is encountered. In the compositions with x=0.10, a complex domain pattern confirming the ferroelectric state is observed. Strong dielectric relaxation around Tm is attributed to domain wall motion. On the other hand, the dielectric spectra in the sample with x=0.20 are very similar to those observed in relaxor ferroelectrics. Analysis of the relaxation spectra at the intermediate concentration, x=0.15, reveals both domain wall response and an additional contribution related to mesoscale polar structures. The appearance of relaxor behavior in BaTi1−xSnxO3 is discussed within the framework of the random field model.

Diffuse phase transition in BaTi1−xSnxO3 ceramics: An intermediate state between ferroelectric and relaxor behavior

The fabrication using silicon micromachining and characterization of an acoustic Lamb wave actuator is presented. The intended use of the device is for mass transport and sensor applications. The device consists of dual interdigitated transducers patterned on a thin-film composite membrane of silicon nitride, platinum, and a sol-gel-derived piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) thin film. The acoustic properties of the device are presented along with preliminary applications to mechanical transport and liquid delivery systems. Improved acoustic signals and improved mass transport are achieved with PZT over present Lamb wave devices utilizing ZnO or AlN as the piezoelectric transducer.

Microfabricated Lamb wave device based on PZT sol-gel thin film for mechanical transport of solid particles and liquids

First-principles density functional theory plus U study on the formation enthalpy of BiFeO3 and the intrinsic vacancies was performed. The formation enthalpy of BiFeO3 from oxides is only −0.2 eV, indicating that BiFeO3 could easily decompose into Bi2O3 and Fe2O3 under thermal or electrical stresses. It is found that the vacancy induced local distortions have insignificant effect on the ferroelectric property, thanks to the high stability of the ferroelectric configuration in BiFeO3. Moreover, Bi and Fe vacancies have comparable formation energies, and become dominant in the oxygen rich conditions, leading to p-type conductivity.

Density functional theory plus U study of vacancy formations in bismuth ferrite

We measure pseudodielectric functions in the visible-deep ultraviolet spectral range of Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 (x=0.2,0.56,0.82) (PZT), Pb0.98Nb0.04(Zr0.2Ti0.8)0.96O3, Pb0.91La0.09(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.98O3, and Pb0.85La0.15Ti0.96O3 films grown on platinized silicon substrates using a sol-gel method and on (0001) sapphire using a radio-frequency sputtering method. Using a parametric optical constant model, we estimate the dielectric functions (ϵ) of the perovskite oxide thin films. Taking the second derivative of the fitted layer dielectric functions and using the standard critical-point model, we determine the parameters of the critical points. In the second derivative spectra, the lowest band-gap energy peak near 4eV is fitted as a double peak for annealed PZTs due to the perovskite phase. As-grown PZTs have mainly pyrochlore phase and the lowest band-gap peak is fitted as a single peak.
