Hydraulic clamping device is widely used in modern manufacturing. But, the energy efficiency of a hydraulic clamping device is lower and the environmental pollution is serious. We introduce a new type of electrical power clamping device in this paper. Its working principle is, by using the screw-toggle-lever three-step series force-amplifier, the rotary motion of the stepmotor is changed into linear motion of the clamping component. Using the self-locking performance of sliding screw mechanism, we can always maintain the clamping force acting on the workpiece during manufacturing process. This clamping device has the following advantages: (1)very compact in structure, (2)saves energy and protects environment against pollution.

Compared with hydraulic press, pneumatic press has many prominent advantages such as low energy consumption, no pollution to environment, fast speed and high efficiency etc. However, its critical disadvantage is that its pressure is much slower than that of the hydraulic system, which results in lower output force. An innovative pneumatic press driven by a new composite pneumatic-mechanical transmission mechanism is presented in this paper. With the aid of the force amplifier of two-step serial toggle-lever, the output force of the piston is amplified twice and the amplification factor can up to 20. Besides, two innovation design plans were discussed, namely, the single-cylinder-single-piston press and the single-cylinder-double-piston press. Moreover, the single-cylinder-double-piston press is remarkable in harmonious symmetry and technical performances.

Pneumatic Press Based on Toggle-Lever Force Amplifier

This document describes a simple industrial clamping device composed of hinges and a lever in series with, and driven by, a geared stepping motor. The principle of operation and technical characteristics are illustrated, and the clamping force is calculated. The advantages of this innovation are 1) reconfigurable, though adjustment of its levers’ position for clamping different sized work pieces ; 2) environmental conservation, Compared to the hydraulic clamping device and air cylinder clamping device, it has less noises, needs less energy and no pollution.

Gear Stepping Motor Driven Reconfigurable Manipulator

According to the conception of symmetric beauty in the aesthetics, a new kind of numerical control press with double operating positions based on lever-toggle force amplifying mechanism driven by linear servo motor is introduced here. Its working principle, characteristic features and mechanical calculating formulas are given also. Compared with traditional mechanical press based on the crank-linkage-slider mechanism driven by common AC motor, the system has following advantages: two operating positions, higher energy transmission and production efficiency, no environmental pollution; lower cost of machine tool. Through rationally designing the acceleration curve of the pressure head, the impacting noise of the system can be reduced greatly. This press is especially suitable for blanking and low-stretching process.

Symmetric Beauty: Double-Position Numerical Control Press Based on Lever-Toggle Force Amplifying Mechanism Driven by Linear Servo Motor

Pneumatic Presses are marked by features of high-motion speed, high productivity, energy conservation and environmental protection. The drawback is its low air system pressure, generally only 0.4-0.7 MPa, which unsuited to occasion require large output force. A new pneumatic press, based on quadratic orthogonal toggle force amplifier, is introduced in this paper. The output force of pneumatic piston is amplified for two times and force amplifying ratio can up to 20, thus to increase the output force substantially, although with constant piston diameter and system pressure. Moreover, with the application of symmetrical double-face rack-gear mechanism, radial force on piston rod and lateral force on pressure head are perfectly balanced. The entire mechanical system boasts features of low friction loss, low vibration and noise and high transmission efficiency.

Symmetrical Beauty: Pneumatic Press Based on Quadratic Orthogonal Force Amplifier Driven by Double-Face Rack-Gear Mechanism

The clamping mechanism plays critical roles in industry manipulator. At present, the clamping mechanism of industry manipulator is most pneumatic drive, which action is rapid. However, for clamping the geometrically rough similar or similar, even complete same work piece, different designers tend to use different design schemes of pneumatic clamping device. Even the same designer may also frequent changing his clamping schemes, such as using different cylinder with different structure, different force amplifier, different clamping mechanism and clamping elements, and so on. The traditional design methods mentioned above are out-of-order and non instructive. The problem is especially critical for today’s manufacturing industry, which features short term, large quantity and individual demand design. This article describes a new innovation design idea of reconfigurable pneumatic clamping mechanism based on toggle-lever force amplifier in series and rod-less piston cylinder. Based on the idea, we designed a series of clamping devices featuring clear logic idea. The graphic example, corresponding formula of output force and mechanics characteristics curve are given which of important reference value and the guide meaning for engineering fields. The reconfigurable pneumatic clamping device of industry manipulator based on toggle-lever force amplifier in series and rod-less piston cylinder present in this paper has the following advantages: (1) Then using the same clamping device, we can realize the changing from external clamping to internal clamping expediently. What we should do is just changing the direction of compressed air in and out the rod-less piston cylinder utilizing its symmetry. (2) The elements of force amplifier and clamping device are all geometrically simple bars, but they have various functions. (3) The elements of force-transferring mechanism based on rolling higher pair and the elements for clamping the work piece both are geometrically simple rolling wheels or its deformation after cutting. They have resembled manufacturing technology but distinct functions. (4) Though the changes of shape, dimension or location of the basic components, the corresponding clamping device can be quickly designed to meet the needs of internal or external clamping to the work piece for different dimension, different shape and different clamping force. (5) Using the two-step or three-step force-amplifier, the device solved the shortcoming of lower press result in the smaller force of pneumatic drive system, and thus can be instead of the hydraulic clamping device in certain extent which easily leads to environmental pollution.Copyright © 2009 by ASME

Reconfigurable Pneumatic Clamping Device of Industry Manipulator Based on Toggle-Lever Force Amplifier in Series

The mechanical press driven by the common AC motor and based on the crank-linkage-slider mechanism is still widely used in the field of mechanical manufacturing. Such press is characterized by poor dynamics performance, serious noise pollution, low energy efficiency, unbalanced overall structure and cumbersome appearance. The object of this paper is to introduce a CNC press driven by the high-speed linear servo motor and based on the two-stage symmetrical orthogonal toggle force amplifying mechanism. Its working principle is to amplify the thrust or tension generated by the high-speed linear servo motor through the two-stage orthogonal toggle force amplifier and then to transmit to the output slider, called pressure head, which finishes the press work on the work piece. The electromechanical integration press has the following advantages: (1) Comparatively low noise pollution for the removal of rapid rotating motor and components. (2) Improved dynamics performance by the computer numeral control of the speed of the pressure head. (3)The magnitude of the stroke and output force of the pressure head can be adjusted in a wide range by editing the program to control initial pressure angle and end pressure angle of the toggle mechanism. (4) Because the force acted on the pressure head in the horizontal direction is symmetric and balanced, theoretically, there is no friction on the pressure head. It is not only good for energy saving, but also for the prolonging of the service life of the machine. (5) Higher level of automation and intelligence than the hydraulic press, and it is free from hydraulic oil pollution.© 2009 ASME
