Hybrid Techniques for Hybrid Systems

In the paper we discuss one of the approaches to modeling and distributed simulation of hybrid systems. We use hybrid state machines to model complex interdependencies between discrete and continuous time behaviors. This framework is fully supported by UML-RT/Java tool AnyLogic developed at Experimental Object Technologies (http://www.xjtek.com). We use high level architecture (HLA) standard for distributed simulation, as a communication and synchronization media for distributed hybrid simulation components. We present a new technique (remote predicate evaluation (RPE)) for distributed modeling of hybrid systems that is applicable to a wide class of simulations. RPE integration with AnyLogic tool and HLA is also considered.

Distributed simulation of hybrid systems with AnyLogic and HLA

This paper introduces the design and implementation of a plug-in free online 3-D interactive laboratory based on networked control system laboratory (NCSLab) framework. The system relying only on HTML5 provides full supports for control engineering experimentation. The users are allowed to design their own control algorithms and apply them to the remote test rigs. Using the web-based interface, multiple widgets such as real-time charts, virtual gauges, and live images are available to customize the monitoring interfaces. To enhance the sense of immersion, 3-D animations which are synchronized with the remote experimental processes are also provided. The users can watch and interact with the remote experiments through the 3-D replicas. Various HTML5 based toolkits are integrated seamlessly under the NCSLab framework. NCSLab provides visualized services for the whole process of control experimentation including remote monitoring, tuning, configuration, and control algorithm implementation. As the network delay could disturb the 3-D representation, a communication scheme using web protocols is also implemented. The feedback from teaching shows the general acceptance and effectiveness of NCSLab is notably high. As most existing online laboratories adopt either native applications or plug-ins, the methodologies and technologies used in NCSLab could be insightful for other online laboratories toward web-based cross-platform systems.

Plug-in Free Web-Based 3-D Interactive Laboratory for Control Engineering Education

This paper describes the design and functionality of an open-source object-oriented library for executing discrete-event simulation models in the Java programming language. The structure of the library is described in terms of its packages, class structure, and functionalities. The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the library so that practitioners and researchers can better use the library for simulation modelling. In addition, the expository nature of this paper can help new users or students learn the basics of discrete-event simulation from the library's design. The capabilities of the library are illustrated through a number of source-code examples.

Emergent synchronisation properties of a refrigerator demand side management system

One of the approaches to modeling hybrid systems is to assign algebraic-differential equations describing the continuous behavior to states of state machines that represent discrete logic. The resulting hybrid state machine is a powerful concept to specify complex interdependencies between discrete and continuous time behaviors. It, however, exposes the simulation engine to a number of problems, which we discuss. The hybrid state machine based approach presented in this paper is fully supported by UML-RT/Java tool TimeBroker developed at Experimental Object Technologies.

Interactive is a free Modelica library that's used in combination with the Dymola modeling environment. Rand Model Designer supports Model Vision Language, an object-oriented modeling language based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

A new version of graphical environment MvStudium 6.0 for modeling and simulation of complex dynamical systems enables to design hierarchical event-driven systems using blocks with oriented (Inputs and Outputs) and non-oriented (Contacts and Flows) connections (oriented and non-oriented blocks), whose internal activity may be described by Behavior Charts (B-Chart is a state machine with continuous Do-activities and without orthogonal states) MvStudium 6.0– is a graphical environment with universal equation-based and UML–based object-oriented modeling language, which graphical form based on B-Charts and hierarchical functional diagrams. The environment supports technology of designing hierarchical models using oriented and nonoriented blocks, that behavior is may be described by hierarchical B-Charts. The environment consists of Model Editor and Virtual Test-bench.
