The invention relates to a method for forming a welded joint (11) between abutting pieces of steel (12). The welded joint (11) is produced by first forming a strength weld (16) and then depositing additional weld metal on the toe (22) of the strength weld (16) to form a toughness weld (23, 24). The fusion interface of the toughness weld forms a minimum angle with the direction of maximum tensile load across the welded joint (11). The toughness toe (26) is separated from the heat-affected zone (27) of the strength weld (16) to effectively prevent propagation of a crack initiated at the toughness weld toe (22) into the heat-affected zone (27) of the strength weld (16). The welded joint (11) so produced is substantially resistant to failure by brittle fracture.

A method of repairing a metallic component, such as a superalloy turbine blade or turbine nozzle, includes the step of preparing the component by stripping the protective coatings from the component. The component is then pre-conditioned for welding by a first hot isostatic process. Once the conditioning sequence is complete, the component is welded using any of a number of welding techniques and by adding weld fillers to the weld area. After the welding step, the component is sealed by a second hot isostatic process treatment performed at conditions similar to the first hot isostatic process. The component is finally prepared for re-entry into service.

An end portion of each of two parts (10, 11) is machined and the machined end portions of the parts (10, 11) are arranged in facing positions to form a welding bevel (13) extending in a longitudinal direction between the parts (10, 11), whereafter a filler metal is deposited into the welding bevel (13). The welding bevel is a narrow bevel with side walls at an aperture angle of no more than 5° relative to the longitudinal central plane of the bevel (13). A nickel alloy comprising 18-32 % of chromium is deposited into the welding bevel. The method is particularly suitable for joining a pressurised water nuclear reactor vessel tubing and an austenitic stainless steel primary circuit pipe.

The machined ends of two parts (2, 4) are arranged in facing positions to form a welding bevel (6) between the parts (2, 4). A series of layers of filler metal are deposited one on top of the other in the welding bevel (6) in a direction thereof corresponding to the width of the parts (2, 4), by melting a wire (14) supplied at a predetermined feed rate to an electric arc between the parts to be welded and an electrode (13) supplied with a predetermined welding current and voltage. Each layer of filler metal essentially consists of a single weld bead across the full width of the bevel (6). The electric welding current and voltage and the feed rate of the wire (14) are predetermined in accordance with the width of the bevel (6).

On usine une partie d'extremite de chacune des pieces (10, 11), on place les parties d'extremite usinees des pieces (10, 11) en vis-a-vis de maniere a constituer un chanfrein de soudage (13) s'etendant dans une direction longitudinale entre les pieces (10, 11) et on depose un metal d'apport dans le chanfrein de soudage (13). Le chanfrein de soudage est un chanfrein etroit dont l'angle d'ouverture des parois laterales par rapport a un plan median du chanfrein (13) de direction longitudinale est au plus egal a 5°. On depose dans le chanfrein de soudage un alliage de nickel comportant de 18 a 32 % de chrome. Le procede s'applique en particulier au raccordement d'une tubulure d'une cuve d'un reacteur nucleaire a eau sous pression et d'une canalisation du circuit primaire en acier inoxydable austenitique.
