Explicit fault analysis is the basis of protection for the bipolar HVDC Line. The characteristics of the initial values of traveling waves under various internal fault conditions are investigated on the basis of the symmetrical component analysis. The criteria of fault classification and faulty-pole selection are put forward based on the zero- and positive-sequence backward traveling waves, and an integrated traveling wave-based protection scheme is proposed. The simulations based on real-time digital simulation show that the proposed scheme can detect faults rapidly, determine the fault type effectively, and select the faulty pole correctly.

Fault Analysis and Traveling-Wave Protection Scheme for Bipolar HVDC Lines

A novel hybrid protection algorithm, based on traveling wave protection principle and boundary protection principle for a monopolar HVDC line is proposed. Stationary wavelet transform (SWT) is adopted in the traveling wave protection to process the dc signal and then wavelet modulus maxima are used to further represent the useful traveling wave signal. The boundary protection principle based on SWT is used jointly with traveling wave protection to distinguish internal faults from external faults. The effect of border distortion, noise, high ground fault resistance, close-up faults, transients caused by lightning strokes and different dc line terminations are considered in the paper.

Hybrid Traveling Wave/Boundary Protection for Monopolar HVDC Line

This paper presents a new method for the boundary protection of series-compensated transmission lines, as well as fault classification. The boundary protection is based on detecting distinct frequency bands contained in the transient fault current wave. Discrete wavelet transform, using db4 as a mother wavelet, is used to capture two bands of frequencies in the transient current signal. The spectral energies of these two bands are obtained and used to determine if the fault is internal or external to the protected zone. Fault classification is done using the discrete wavelet transform. Using Haar as the mother wavelet, the coefficients of a frequency band in the range of 1 kHz-3 kHz are obtained for the three phase and ground currents. The average value of the coefficients of each current wave is then computed and used to classify the faulted phases. The basic principle of the protection scheme is described and its response to the series-compensated transmission lines is studied for a wide range of compensation levels, fault conditions, fault types, and fault locations. The stability of the algorithm under various load switching cases is also tested. Fault simulations are performed using power system computer-aided design/electromagnetic transient and direct current program and the results are then interfaced to MATLAB, where the algorithm is implemented. It is found that the proposed method gives reliable results in the boundary protection and fault classification of series-compensated lines.

Usage of wavelet transform in the protection of series-compensated transmission lines

Two of the most expected objectives of transmission line protection are: 1) differentiating precisely the internal faults from external and 2) indicating exactly the fault type using one end data only. This paper proposes an improved solution based on wavelet transform and self-organized neural network. The measured voltage and current signals are preprocessed first and then decomposed using wavelet multiresolution analysis to obtain the high frequency details and low frequency approximations. The patterns formed based on high frequency signal components are arranged as inputs of neural network #1, whose task is to indicate whether the fault is internal or external. The patterns formed using low frequency approximations are arranged as inputs of neural network #2, whose task is to indicate the exact fault type. The new method uses both low and high frequency information of the fault signal to achieve an advanced line protection scheme. The proposed approach is verified using frequency-dependent transmission line model and the test results prove its enhanced performance. A discussion of the application issues for the proposed approach is provided at the end where the generality of the proposed approach and guidance for future study are pointed out

Transmission Line Boundary Protection Using Wavelet Transform and Neural Network

This paper presents a novel ultra-high-speed directional protection scheme developed using mathematical morphology (MM). The MM technique proposed is used to extract transient features from fault-generated voltage and current wave signals propagating along transmission lines during a post-fault period. Fault direction is determined by two composite relaying signals, which are composed of the extracted transient features. A variety of fault scenarios have been simulated to evaluate the validity of the proposed scheme.

Ultra-high-speed directional protection of transmission lines using mathematical morphology

This paper proposes a new noncommunication protection technique for transmission line protection. The technique relies on firstly the detection of fault generated high frequency current transient signals. A specially designed multi-channel filter unit is then applied to the captured signals to extract desired bands of high frequency signals. Comparison between the spectral energies of different bands of the filter outputs determines whether a fault is internal or external to the protected zone. In addition to the saving in costs through negating the need for a communication link, the technique also retains many advantages of the 'transient based protection' technology, such as insensitivity to fault type, fault position, fault path resistance and fault inception angle. It is also not affected by CT saturation, the power frequency short-circuit level at the terminating busbar or the precise configuration of the source side networks.
