This paper proposes an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller for robotic manipulators. An adaptive single-input single-output (SISO) fuzzy system is applied to calculate each element of the control gain vector in a sliding mode controller. The adaptive law is designed based on the Lyapunov method. Mathematical proof for the stability and the convergence of the system is presented. Various operation situations such as the set point control and the trajectory control are simulated. The simulation results demonstrate that the chattering and the steady state errors, which usually occur in the classical sliding mode control, are eliminated and satisfactory trajectory tracking is achieved.

An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller for robotic manipulators

A new design approach of an adaptive fuzzy terminal sliding mode controller for linear systems with mismatched time-varying uncertainties is presented in this paper. A fuzzy terminal sliding mode controller is designed to retain the advantages of the terminal sliding mode controller and to reduce the chattering occurred with the terminal sliding mode controller. The sufficient condition is provided for the uncertain system to be invariant on the sliding surface. The parameters of the output fuzzy sets in the fuzzy mechanism are adapted on-line to improve the performance of the fuzzy sliding mode control system. The bounds of the uncertainties are not required to be known in advance for the presented adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller. The stability of the fuzzy control system is also guaranteed. Moreover, the chattering around the sliding surface in the sliding mode control can be reduced by the proposed design approach. Simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive fuzzy terminal sliding mode controller.

Adaptive fuzzy terminal sliding mode controller for linear systems with mismatched time-varying uncertainties

This paper presents the design and analysis of an intelligent control system that inherits the robust properties of sliding-mode control (SMC) for an n-link robot manipulator, including actuator dynamics in order to achieve a high-precision position tracking with a firm robustness. First, the coupled higher order dynamic model of an n-link robot manipulator is briefy introduced. Then, a conventional SMC scheme is developed for the joint position tracking of robot manipulators. Moreover, a fuzzy-neural-network inherited SMC (FNNISMC) scheme is proposed to relax the requirement of detailed system information and deal with chattering control efforts in the SMC system. In the FNNISMC strategy, the FNN framework is designed to mimic the SMC law, and adaptive tuning algorithms for network parameters are derived in the sense of projection algorithm and Lyapunov stability theorem to ensure the network convergence as well as stable control performance. Numerical simulations and experimental results of a two-link robot manipulator actuated by DC servo motors are provided to justify the claims of the proposed FNNISMC system, and the superiority of the proposed FNNISMC scheme is also evaluated by quantitative comparison with previous intelligent control schemes.

Fuzzy-Neural-Network Inherited Sliding-Mode Control for Robot Manipulator Including Actuator Dynamics

In this paper, a robust adaptive control strategy using a fuzzy compensator for MEMS triaxial gyroscope, which has system nonlinearities, including model uncertainties and external disturbances, is proposed. A fuzzy logic controller that could compensate for the model uncertainties and external disturbances is incorporated into the adaptive control scheme in the Lyapunov framework. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller can guarantee the convergence and asymptotical stability of the closed-loop system. The proposed adaptive fuzzy control strategy does not depend on accurate mathematical models, which simplifies the design procedure. The innovative development of intelligent control methods incorporated with conventional control for the MEMS gyroscope is derived with the strict theoretical proof of the Lyapunov stability. Numerical simulations are investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive fuzzy control scheme and demonstrate the satisfactory tracking performance and robustness against model uncertainties and external disturbances compared with conventional adaptive control method.

Robust Adaptive Control of MEMS Triaxial Gyroscope Using Fuzzy Compensator

A computed torque controller for uncertain robotic manipulator systems: Fuzzy approach

This paper considers adaptive fuzzy control of robotic manipulators based on sliding mode. It is first shown that an adaptive fuzzy system with the system representative point (RP, or as is often termed, a switching function in variable structure control (VSC) theory) and its derivative as inputs, can approximate the robot nonlinear dynamics in the neighborhood of the switching hyperplane. Then a new method for designing an adaptive fuzzy control system based on sliding mode is proposed for the trajectory tracking control of a robot with unknown nonlinear dynamics. The system stability and tracking error convergence are also proved by Lyapunov techniques.
