CIVIL STRUCTURES ARE USUALLY PRONE TO DAMAGE DURING THEIR SERVICE LIFE AND IT LEADS THEM TO LOSS THEIR SERVICEABILITY AND SAFETY. THUS, DAM-AGE ASSESSMENT CAN GUARANTEE THE INTEGRITY OF STRUCTURES. AS A RESULT, A STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTION APPROACH INCLUDING TWO MAIN COMPONENTS, A SET OF ACCELEROMETERS TO RECORD THE RESPONSE DATA AND A DATA MINING (DM) PROCEDURE, IS WIDELY USED TO EXTRACT THE INFORMATION ON THE STRUCTURAL HEALTH CONDITION. IN THE LAST DECADES, DM HAS PROVIDED NUMEROUS SOLUTIONS TO STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING (SHM) PROBLEMS AS AN ALL-INCLUSIVE TECHNIQUE DUE TO ITS POWERFUL COMPUTATIONAL ABILITY. THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO ILLUSTRATE THE DATA MINING TECHNIQUES (DMTS) APPLICATIONS IN SHM THROUGH AN INTENSIVE REVIEW OF THOSE ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE USE OF DMTS AIMED FOR CLASSIFICATION-, PREDICTION- AND OPTIMIZATION-BASED DATA MINING METHODS. ACCORDING TO THIS CATEGORIZATION, APPLICATIONS OF DMTS WITH RESPECT TO SHM RESEARCH AREA ARE CLASSIFIED AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, APPLICATIONS OF DMTS IN THE SHM DOMAIN HAVE INCREASINGLY BEEN IMPLEMENTED, IN THE LAST DECADE AND THE MOST POPULAR TECHNIQUES IN THE AREA WERE ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK (ANN), PRINCIPAL COMPONENT ANALYSIS (PCA) AND GENETIC ALGORITHM (GA), RESPECTIVELY.

Improving the prediction of ground motion parameters based on an efficient bagging ensemble model of M5′ and CART algorithms

A train operation optimization by minimizing its traction energy subject to various constraints is carried out using nature-inspired evolutionary algorithms. The optimization process results in switching points that initiate cruising and coasting phases of the driving. Due to nonlinear optimization formulation of the problem, nature-inspired evolutionary search methods, Genetic Simulated Annealing, Firefly, and Big Bang-Big Crunch algorithms were employed in this study. As a case study a real-like train and test track from a part of Eskisehir light rail network were modeled. Speed limitations, various track alignments, maximum allowable trip time, and changes in train mass were considered, and punctuality was put into objective function as a penalty factor. Results have shown that all three evolutionary methods generated effective and consistent solutions. However, it has also been shown that each one has different accuracy and convergence characteristics.

Energy-Efficient Train Operation Using Nature-Inspired Algorithms

The present paper aims to explore damage assessment methodology based on the changes in dynamic parameters properties of vibration of a structural system. The finite-element model is used to apply at an element level. Reduction of the element stiffness is considered for structural damage. A procedure for locating and quantifying damaged areas of the structure based on the innovative Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization method is developed for continuous variable optimization. For verifying the method a number of damage scenarios for simulated structures have been considered. For the purpose of damage location and severity assessment the approach is applied in three examples by using complete and incomplete modal data. The effect of noise on the accuracy of the results is investigated in some cases. A great unbraced frame with a lot of damaged element is considered to prove the ability of proposed method. More over BB- BC optimization method in damage detection is compared with particle swarm optimizer with passive congregation (PSOPC) algorithm. This work shows that BB-BC optimization method is a feasible methodology to detect damage location and severity while introducing numerous advantages compared to referred method.

A New Damage Detection Method: Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) Algorithm

This paper presents damage detection and assessment methodology based on the changes in dynamic parameters of a structural system. The method is applied at an element level using a finite element model. According to continuum damage mechanics, damage is represented by a reduction factor of the element stiffness. A recently developed metaheuristic optimization algorithm known as the charged system search (CSS) is utilized for locating and quantifying the damaged areas of the structure. In order to demonstrate the abilities of this method, three examples are included comprising of a 10-elements cantilever beam, a Bowstring plane truss, and a 39-element three-story three-bay plane frame. The possible damage types in structures by considering several damage scenarios and using incomplete modal data are modeled. Finally, results are obtained from the CSS algorithm by detecting damage in these structures and compared to the results of the PSOPC algorithm. In addition, the effect of noise is shown in the results of the CSS algorithm by suitable diagrams. As is illustrated, this method has acceptable results in the structural detection damage with low computational time.

Charged System Search Algorithm Utilized for Structural Damage Detection

. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on shear strength enhancement of reinforced concrete deep beams externally reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. A total of six deep beam specimens of two different classes, as-built (unstrengthened) and retrofitted were tested in the experimental evaluation program. Two composite systems namely carbon/epoxy laminates and carbon/epoxy sheets were used for retrofit evaluation. A comparative study of the experimental results with published analytical models, including the ACI 440 model, was also conducted in order to evaluate the different analytical models and identify the influencing factors on the shear behavior of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete deep beams. Experimental results indicated that the composite systems provided substantial increase in ultimate strength of strengthened beams as compared to the as-built beam specimen. The strength gain caused by the CFRP sheets was in the range of 30–58% Analytical Comparison indicated that the shear span-to-depth ratio (a/d) is an important factor that actively controls the shear failure mode of beam and consequently influences on the shear strength enhancement.

An Experimental Study on Shear Strengthening of RC Lightweight Deep Beams Using CFRP

Ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) for elastic response spectra in the Iranian plateau using Gene Expression Programming (GEP)

Bandar Abbas (center of Hormozgan province) is the most important port city in the south of Iran because of its historical places, cultural, economic, social and political importance. High risk of earthquake occurrence in this city and its province indicates the necessity of surveying the seismic vulnerability of buildings. The object of this paper is collected from existing Buildings, compiled by aggregating data from sidewalk surveys and other observations. Estimated loss distributions and damage were mapped on area by area. Seismic hazard in the area was obtained using the seismic source zones for a probability level of 10 percent occurrence in 50 years. Finally value of vulnerability was mapped on seismic zones in each area. The older areas of the cities are expected to suffer the highest amount of damage and the highest seismic hazard occurs in these areas as well. We can realize the general vulnerability of the city.
