Temperature and concentration dependences of thermoelectric power at high temperatures in some aluminium alloys

Results of static magnetic susceptibility , chi (T), measurements are reported for a number of dilute Al-3d alloys in the temperature range 2-300K with emphasis on AlMn and AlCr alloys of concentrations up to 2 at.%. Single impurity and interaction effects are discussed for these two systems. It is concluded that the spin susceptibility of isolated Mn atoms in Al is consistent with a Curie-Weiss law in the region 100-300K with a Kondo temperature TK=600K and an effective moment of 3.2+or-0.2 mu B. Experience is a large orbital contribution to chi Al(T)-and because of the decrease in TK due to thermal expansion of the host Al. Nearest-neighbour triplets of both Mn and Cr in Al are more magnetic than isolated atoms, having Kondo temperatures of approximately 3 and 2K but rather low effective moments of 1.5 and 1 mu B respectively. No evidence for nearest-neighbour pair interactions was found in the present experiments.

Single impurity behaviour and interaction effects in the magnetic susceptibility of AlMn and AlCr alloys

We report measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) for a series of ${\text{Pb}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\text{Tl}}_{x}\text{Te}$ crystals with $x=0.0$ to 1.3%. Although the TEP is very large for $x=0.0$, using a single-band analysis based on older work for dilute magnetic alloys we do find evidence for a Kondo contribution of $11\char21{}18\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\text{V}/\text{K}$. This analysis suggests that ${T}_{K}$ is $\ensuremath{\simeq}50\char21{}70\text{ }\text{K}$, a factor 10 higher than previously thought.

Evidence for a charge Kondo effect in Pb(1-x)Tl(x)Te from measurements of thermoelectric power

We report the Nernst effect ($\ensuremath{\nu}$) and thermoelectric power ($S$) data for the Ce${}_{2}$PdIn${}_{8}$ heavy-fermion compound. Both $S$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ behave anomalously at low temperatures: The thermopower shows a Kondo-like maximum at $T=37$ K, while the Nernst coefficient becomes greatly enhanced and field dependent below $T\ensuremath{\approx}30$ K. In the zero-$T$ limit $S/T$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}/T$ diverge logarithmically, which can be related to the occurrence of the quantum critical point (QCP). The presented results suggest that the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave scenario may be applicable to QCP in Ce${}_{2}$PdIn${}_{8}$.

Quantum criticality in Ce 2 PdIn 8 : A thermoelectric study

Thermoelectric power (S) measurements have been made on several supersaturated AlMn alloys containing up to 2 at.% Mn in solid solution. The Mn contribution has been obtained from 2 to 440K to an accuracy of +or-5% by making corrections for phonon scattering and phonon drag. The results are compared with data for the more strongly magnetic alloys, CuFe, AuV and AuCo, by plotting S/SN against T/ Theta R, where Theta R is the characteristic temperature from the -T2 term in the low temperature electrical resistivity (except for AuCo), and SN is a normalization factor. The data for all the alloys lie on the same curve in the temperature range considered, (T/ Theta R<or=0.8), to an accuracy of at least +or-10%, although there are significant deviations from linearity above T/ Theta R=0.15.
