Vibration control of civil structures using piezoceramic smart materials: A review

An updated state-of-the-art review on response-triggered structural control system is presented. The review mainly focuses on the active control of structures for earthquake excitations, and covers theoretical backgrounds of different active control schemes, important parametric observations on active structural control, limitations and difficulties of their practical implementation, and brief descriptions of three actively controlled tall buildings in Japan. A brief introduction of more promising semi-active control of structures is also presented.

Modified Bang-Bang Control Law for Structural Control Implementation

This research concerns the active vibration control of a three-story model structural frame by using piezoceramics smart materials, in particular lead zirconate titanate (PZT), in the form of patches. These PZT patches are surface-bonded on the structure and function as actuators and sensors. To assist the control design, system identification is first performed. To excite the frame for identification purposes, a sweep sinusoidal input is used to drive the PZT actuator patches, and then a sixth-order state space model with a fit of 90% is identified to represent the dynamics of the first three modes of the model structural frame. A full-state linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller is designed using the identified model. To achieve the full state feedback, an observer is designed based on the identified model. Optimal Vibration Control of a Model Frame Structure Using Piezoceramic Sensors and Actuators

The linear quadratic regulator has been used extensively in many control systems designed for structural control applications due to its stability and robustness. Recent results obtained from simulation, model experiments, and full-scale structural applications, however, show that it is difficult to employ linear feedback control laws to produce a significant peak response reduction when the peak response occurs during the first few cycles of the time history. In this paper, based on the fact that minimizing the maximum response can be approximated by minimizing a higher-order performance index, a higher-order performance criterion is introduced and an optimal nonlinear feedback control law is derived based upon this criterion. It is shown that this nonlinear control law can significantly improve peak response reduction under the same constraints imposed on the control resources as in the linear quadratic regulator case.
