Cloud computing has emerged as the most favorable computing platform for researchers and industry. The load balanced task scheduling has emerged as an important and challenging research problem in the Cloud computing. Swarm intelligence-based meta-heuristic algorithms are considered more suitable for Cloud scheduling and load balancing. The optimization procedure of swarm intelligence-based meta-heuristics consists of two major components that are the local and global search. These algorithms find the best position through the local and global search. To achieve an optimized mapping strategy for tasks to the resources, a balance between local and global search plays an effective role. The inertia weight is an important control attribute to effectively adjust the local and global search process. There are many inertia weight strategies; however, the existing approaches still require fine-tuning to achieve optimum scheduling. The selection of a suitable inertia weight strategy is also an important factor. This paper contributed an adaptive Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) based task scheduling approach that reduces the task execution time, and increases throughput and Average Resource Utilization Ratio (ARUR). Moreover, an adaptive inertia weight strategy namely Linearly Descending and Adaptive Inertia Weight (LDAIW) is introduced. The proposed scheduling approach provides a better balance between local and global search leading to an optimized task scheduling. The performance of the proposed approach has been evaluated and compared against five renown PSO based inertia weight strategies concerning makespan and throughput. The experiments are then extended and compared the proposed approach against the other four renowned meta-heuristic scheduling approaches. Analysis of the simulated experimentation reveals that the proposed approach attained up to 10%, 12% and 60% improvement for makespan, throughput and ARUR respectively.

IoT Task Management Mechanism Based on Predictive Optimization for Efficient Energy Consumption in Smart Residential Buildings

The connectivity of our surrounding objects to the internet plays a tremendous role in our daily lives. Many network applications have been developed in every domain of life, including business, healthcare, smart homes, and smart cities, to name a few. As these network applications provide a wide range of services for large user groups, the network intruders are prone to developing intrusion skills for attack and malicious compliance. Therefore, safeguarding network applications and things connected to the internet has always been a point of interest for researchers. Many studies propose solutions for intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems. Network communities have produced benchmark datasets available for researchers to improve the accuracy of intrusion detection systems. The scientific community has presented data mining and machine learning-based mechanisms to detect intrusion with high classification accuracy. This paper presents an intrusion detection system based on the ensemble of prediction and learning mechanisms to improve anomaly detection accuracy in a network intrusion environment. The learning mechanism is based on automated machine learning, and the prediction model is based on the Kalman filter. Performance analysis of the proposed intrusion detection system is evaluated using publicly available intrusion datasets UNSW-NB15 and CICIDS2017. The proposed model-based intrusion detection accuracy for the UNSW-NB15 dataset is 98.801 percent, and the CICIDS2017 dataset is 97.02 percent. The performance comparison results show that the proposed ensemble model-based intrusion detection significantly improves the intrusion detection accuracy.

An Ensemble of Prediction and Learning Mechanism for Improving Accuracy of Anomaly Detection in Network Intrusion Environments

Internet of Things (IoT) is an instantly exacerbated communication technology that is manifesting miraculous effectuation to revolutionize conventional means of network communication. The applications of IoT are compendiously encompassing our prevalent lifestyle and the integration of IoT with other technologies makes this application spectrum even more latitudinous. However, this admissibility also introduces IoT with a pervasive array of imperative security hazards that demands noteworthy solutions to be swamped. In this scientific study, we proposed Deep Learning (DL) driven Software Defined Networking (SDN) enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to combat emerging cyber threats in IoT. Our proposed model (DNNLSTM) is capable to encounter a tremendous class of common as well as less frequently occurring cyber threats in IoT communications. The proposed model is trained on CICIDS 2018 dataset, and its performance is evaluated on several decisive parameters i.e Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1-Score. Furthermore, the designed framework is analytically compared with relevant classifiers, i.e., DNNGRU, and BLSTM for appropriate validation. An exhaustive performance comparison is also conducted between the proposed system and a few preeminent solutions from the literature. The proposed design has circumvented the existing literature with unprecedented performance repercussions such as 99.55% accuracy, 99.36% precision, 99.44% recall, and 99.42% F1-score. 

Cyber Threats Detection in Smart Environments Using SDN-Enabled DNN-LSTM Hybrid Framework

Smart city networks involve many applications that impose specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, thus representing a challenging scenario for network management. Solutions aiming to guarantee QoS support have not been deployed in large-scale networks. Traffic classification is a mechanism used to manage different aspects, including QoS requirements. However, conventional traffic classification methods, such as the port-based method, are inefficient because of their inability to handle dynamic port allocation and encryption. Traffic classification using machine learning has gained research interest as an alternative method to achieve high performance. In fact, machine learning embeds intelligence into network functions, thus improving network management. In this study, we apply machine learning algorithms to predict network traffic classification. We apply four supervised learning algorithms: support vector machine, random forest, k-nearest neighbors, and decision tree. We also apply a port-based method of traffic classification based on applications’ popular assigned port numbers. Then, we compare the results of this method to those obtained from the machine learning algorithms. The evaluation results indicate that the decision tree algorithm provides the highest average accuracy among the evaluated algorithms, at 99.18%. Moreover, network traffic classification using machine learning provides more accurate results and higher performance than the port-based method.

A Comparative Study of Traffic Classification Techniques for Smart City Networks.

In recent years, rapid development has been made to the Internet of Things communication technologies, infrastructure, and physical resources management. These developments and research trends address challenges such as heterogeneous communication, quality of service requirements, unpredictable network conditions, and a massive influx of data. One major contribution to the research world is in the form of software-defined networking applications, which aim to deploy rule-based management to control and add intelligence to the network using high-level policies to have integral control of the network without knowing issues related to low-level configurations. Machine learning techniques coupled with software-defined networking can make the networking decision more intelligent and robust. The Internet of Things application has recently adopted virtualization of resources and network control with software-defined networking policies to make the traffic more controlled and maintainable. However, the requirements of software-defined networking and the Internet of Things must be aligned to make the adaptations possible. This paper aims to discuss the possible ways to make software-defined networking enabled Internet of Things application and discusses the challenges solved using the Internet of Things leveraging the software-defined network. We provide a topical survey of the application and impact of software-defined networking on the Internet of things networks. We also study the impact of machine learning techniques applied to software-defined networking and its application perspective. The study is carried out from the different perspectives of software-based Internet of Things networks, including wide-area networks, edge networks, and access networks. Machine learning techniques are presented from the perspective of network resources management, security, classification of traffic, quality of experience, and quality of service prediction. Finally, we discuss challenges and issues in adopting machine learning and software-defined networking for the Internet of Things applications.

A Topical Review on Machine Learning, Software Defined Networking, Internet of Things Applications: Research Limitations and Challenges

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has already taken millions of lives and damaged economies across the globe. Most COVID-19 deaths and economic losses are reported from densely crowded cities. It is comprehensible that the effective control and prevention of epidemic/pandemic infectious diseases is vital. According to WHO, testing and diagnosis is the best strategy to control pandemics. Scientists worldwide are attempting to develop various innovative and cost-efficient methods to speed up the testing process. This paper comprehensively evaluates the applicability of the recent top ten state-of-the-art Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for automatically detecting COVID-19 infection using chest X-ray images. Moreover, it provides a comparative analysis of these models in terms of accuracy. This study identifies the effective methodologies to control and prevent infectious respiratory diseases. Our trained models have demonstrated outstanding results in classifying the COVID-19 infected chest x-rays. In particular, our trained models MobileNet, EfficentNet, and InceptionV3 achieved a classification average accuracy of 95\%, 95\%, and 94\% test set for COVID-19 class classification, respectively. Thus, it can be beneficial for clinical practitioners and radiologists to speed up the testing, detection, and follow-up of COVID-19 cases.
