Distributed generation (DG) is one of the key components of the emerging microgrid concept that enables renewable energy integration in a distribution network. In DG unit operation, inverters play a vital role in interfacing energy sources with the grid utility. An effective interfacing can successfully be accomplished by operating inverters with effective control techniques. This paper reviews and categorises different control methods (voltage and primary) for improving microgrid power quality, stability and power sharing approaches. In addition, the specific characteristics of microgrids are summarised to distinguish from distribution network control. Moreover, various control approaches including inner-loop controls and primary controls are compared according to their relative advantages and disadvantages. Finally, future research trends for microgrid control are discussed pointing out the research opportunities. This review paper will be a good basis for researchers working in microgrids and for industry to implement the ongoing research improvement in real systems.

Overview of AC Microgrid Controls with Inverter-Interfaced Generations

For high-power applications, paralleling converters is a popular approach to increase the power capacity of the system. Circulating current has been a major concern for the implementation of paralleled converters. This paper proposes a three-level space vector modulation (SVM) scheme for a system with two paralleled voltage-source converters (VSCs) with common-mode inductor (CMI) or single-phase inductors. The proposed scheme aims to reduce the zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) and the magnitude of common-mode voltage (CMV) of the system simultaneously. The ZSCC patterns with respect to modulation schemes are first analyzed to provide a clear understanding of the generation of ZSCC. Based on the analysis, the proposed three-level modulation scheme is introduced. Furthermore, performance regarding the ZSCC peak value, impact on the common-mode current (CMC), CMI scaling analysis, and switching losses are analyzed and compared with the existing methods. The proposed method has been verified in both simulation and experiment.

A Three-Level Space Vector Modulation Scheme for Paralleled Converters to Reduce Circulating Current and Common-Mode Voltage

Parallel three-level T-type inverters (3LT2Is) can effectively increase the power rating. However, when multiple 3LT2Is are connected to a single dc bus, the zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) will occur. The ZSCC will distort the output currents and increase the system loss. To overcome this drawback, this paper proposes a novel deadbeat control scheme for the ZSCC suppression. A generalized model for analyzing ZSCC in parallel 3LT2 Is is developed for designing the deadbeat control method. The proposed deadbeat control scheme is realized by real time adjusting the dwell time of small vectors in each space vector modulation. Compared to the conventional PI control method, the influence of different sector is eliminated, thus, improving the output current waveform and reducing the ZSCC. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiments.

Space Vector Modulation for Circulating Current Suppression Using Deadbeat Control Strategy in Parallel Three-Level Neutral-Clamped Inverters

In the modern era, distributed generation is considered as an alternative source for power generation. Especially, need of the time is to provide the three-phase loads with smooth sinusoidal voltages having fixed frequency and amplitude. A common solution is the integration of power electronics converters in the systems for connecting distributed generation systems to the stand-alone loads. Thus, the presence of suitable control techniques, in the power electronic converters, for robust stability, abrupt response, optimal tracking ability and error eradication are inevitable. A comprehensive review based on design, analysis, validation of the most suitable digital control techniques and the options available for the researchers for improving the power quality is presented in this paper with their pros and cons. Comparisons based on the cost, schemes, performance, modulation techniques and coordinates system are also presented. Finally, the paper describes the performance evaluation of the control schemes on a voltage source inverter (VSI) and proposes the different aspects to be considered for selecting a power electronics inverter topology, reference frames, filters, as well as control strategy.

Digital Control Techniques Based on Voltage Source Inverters in Renewable Energy Applications: A Review

Although high-frequency circulating current exists in parallel-operated inverters, it has not attracted as much attention as low-frequency circulating current, and thus has not been analyzed in detail previously. In this paper, a mathematical model and analysis are presented, which reveal the spectrum components and their changing trends of the circulating currents caused by carrier phase differences. The impact of carrier phase difference on high-frequency circulating current is also analyzed and verified. A closed-loop control scheme is proposed to suppress the switching frequency circulating current caused by carrier phase difference. In addition, the deadbeat and closed-loop control are combined to suppress the low- and high-frequency circulating currents simultaneously, to improve the overall performance of circulating current suppression. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by the simulation and experimental results acquired from a laboratory platform.

Analysis and Suppression of Circulating Current Caused by Carrier Phase Difference in Parallel Voltage Source Inverters With SVPWM

Module parallel connection for three-phase VSC can increase the system level effectively. However, the circulating currents problem will occur. The circulating currents will distort the three-phase currents, increase the power loss and decrease the system efficiency. A novel deadbeat circuiting currents control method is proposed in this paper. Based on the analysis of the average model of parallel system, a circuiting currents deadbeat controller is designed while presenting the design method. The control strategy is realized by adjusting the voltage zero vector of space-vector pulse-width modulation in each paralleled module. No additional hardware is needed through the method. Fast dynamic response can be achieved and the performance of circulating currents is better compared with conventional PI controller. This method can be applied to common dc-link double parallel three-phase voltage converters with communication line. The validity of proposed theory was verified by simulation and experimental results. It is shown that the parallel converters can operate with different line inductor or different line currents by using this novel control strategy.

Deadbeat Control Strategy of Circulating Currents in Parallel Connection System of Three-Phase PWM Converter

Parallel three-phase inverters structure has become a popular way to increase capacity. However, circulating current will be produced. In practical application, inverters are controlled by digital system. Consequently, it is inevitable to consume time due to sampling and computing. As a result, the performance of zero-axis current loop would be directly affected. This paper presents a dual updating SVPWM-based method to control the circulating current exhibited in parallel three phase PWM inverters. With the employment of PI controller, better circulating current suppression performance can be achieved by means of the proposed method because of the realized dual sampling and dual PWM duty ratios updating (DSDU) in a carrier period, which results in dual updating of the circulating current control variable in a PWM period with switching frequency unchanged nor extra hardware added. By comparing the performance with the traditional SSSU method, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated with implementation using TMS3202812 digital signal processor.
