Summary The post-real time product of Day-1 Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) is evaluated over Mainland China from April to December 2014 at the hourly timescale, against data from hourly ground-based observations. In addition, the IMERG product is compared with its predecessor-the Version-7 post-real-time 3B42 (3B42V7) product of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) at its original 3-hourly and then daily timescales for the same period. All the products are cross-evaluated at gridded, regional, and national scales. Results show that: (1) the Day-1 IMERG shows appreciably better performance than 3B42V7 at both sub-daily and daily timescales, and all the three spatial scales. The gap between the two products is more significant at the sub-daily resolution; (2) Out of the six sub-regions of China, IMERG especially performs better than 3B42V7 at the mid- and high-latitudes, as well as relatively dry climate regions; (3) IMERG can better reproduce the probability density function (PDF) in terms of precipitation intensity, particularly in the low ranges; and (4) although IMERG better captures the precipitation diurnal variability, both products have room to further improve their capability, particularly in the dry climate and high-latitude regions. This study is among the earliest evaluation and comparison of IMERG and 3B42V7 products, which could be valuable in providing reference for the development of IMERG algorithms, associated global products, and various applications as well.

First-Year Evaluation of GPM Day-1 IMERG and TMPA Version-7 Legacy Products over Mainland China at Multiple Spatiotemporal Scales

The present study comprehensively analyzes error characteristics and performance of the two latest GPM-era satellite precipitation products over eastern China from April 2014 to March 2016. Analysis results indicate that the two products have totally different spatial distributions of total bias. Many of the underestimations for the GSMap-gauged could be traced to significant hit bias, with a secondary contribution from missed precipitation. For IMERG, total bias illustrates significant overestimation over most of the eastern part of China, except upper reaches of Yangtze and Yellow River basins. GSMap-gauged tends to overestimate light precipitation (<16 mm/day) and underestimate precipitation with rain rate larger than 16 mm/day; however, IMERG underestimates precipitation at rain rate between 8 and 64 mm/day and overestimates precipitation at rain rate more than 64 mm/day. IMERG overestimates extreme precipitation indices (RR99P and R20TOT), with relative bias values of 17.9% and 11.5%, respectively. But GSMap-gauged shows significant underestimation of these indices. In addition, both products performed well in the Huaihe, Liaohe, and Yangtze River basins for extreme precipitation detection. At basin scale comparisons, the GSMap-gauged data has a relatively higher accuracy than IMERG, especially at the Haihe, Huaihe, Liaohe, and Yellow River basins.

Comprehensive comparison of daily IMERG and GSMaP satellite precipitation products in Ardabil Province, Iran

Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) is an important satellite precipitation product of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. Quantitative information about the errors of IMERG has great significance for the data developers and end users. In order to investigate the characteristics and the source of the errors contained in IMERG, a bias-decomposition scheme was employed to evaluate the hourly IMERG over the eastern part of Mainland China during the warm season. First, the total bias of IMERG before and after calibration (termed as precipitationUncal and precipitationCal) was calculated using rain gauge measurements as reference. Then the bias was decomposed into three independent components including false bias, missed bias, and hit bias. Finally, the hit bias was further decomposed according to the rainfall intensity measured by rain gauges. The results indicate that (1) the bias of precipitationUncal over the north part is dominated by hit bias and false bias, leading to the serious overestimation for the precipitation over this area, but it underestimates the precipitation over the south part with the false bias and missed bias acting as major contributors; (2) the precipitationCal overestimates the precipitation over more than 80% of the study areas mainly as a result of a large amplitude of false bias; (3) the calibration algorithm used by IMERG could not reduce the missed bias and enlarges the false bias over some regions, revealing a shortcoming of this algorithm in that it could not effectively alleviate the bias resulting from the rain areas delineation; (4) the hit bias of IMERG is strongly related with the rainfall intensity of rain gauge measurements, which should be beneficial for reducing the errors of IMERG. This study provides a deep insight into the characteristics and sources of the biases inherent in IMERG, which is significant for its utilization and possible correction in future.
