Additive manufacturing of metals: a brief review of the characteristic microstructures and properties of steels, Ti-6Al-4V and high-entropy alloys

Material properties emerge from phenomena on scales ranging from Angstroms to millimeters, and only a multiscale treatment can provide a complete understanding. Materials researchers must therefore understand fundamental concepts and techniques from different fields, and these are presented in a comprehensive and integrated fashion for the first time in this book. Incorporating continuum mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, atomistic simulations and multiscale techniques, the book explains many of the key theoretical ideas behind multiscale modeling. Classical topics are blended with new techniques to demonstrate the connections between different fields and highlight current research trends. The severe operation conditions of the hot working process lead to premature failure of the hot working tools. The dominant failure of hot working tools is wear of the tool surfaces induced by the thermal softening phenomenon. Several researchers related to the service life extension technology of hot working tools paid attention to the protective overlay coating technology, so called hardfacing, for preventing premature wear of the hot working tool. This paper reviewed recent research on the application of hardfacing technology to hot working tools. In addition, the key technology and the state-of-the art of the hardfacing technology related to improvement of the wear characteristics of hot working tools were discussed. Finally, future research issues of the hardfacing technology to enhance the service life and wear characteristics of the hot working tools were described.

Hardfacing technologies for improvement of wear characteristics of hot working tools: A Review

Co-based alloy coating was deposited on tool steel by powder feeding laser cladding. Sections of such coatings were examined to reveal their microstructures and phases using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results showed that the prime phase ( γ -Co dendrite) and other phases, including Cr 23 C 6 , Co 7 W 6 , and CrNi existed in the coatings. Some different solidification morphologies, such as planar (at the interface), cellular and dendrite formed, varying from the interface to the surface. Fine microstructures of γ -Co dendrite and lamellar eutectic in dendritical regions strengthened the coatings. Besides, the effects of aged treatment on the microstructure and microhardness of the surface coating were studied. Aged treatment led to the precipitations of some carbide particles (Cr 7 C 3 and Co 3 C) and boride particles (Co 4 B) from the cladded coating, causing an increase in microhardness in the laser-cladded coating.
