In this paper, the design method of a quadruple-band rejection ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with three co-directional complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) is proposed. Within the design step, individual antennas corresponding to each rejection band is flrst designed, and then a flnalized structure is determined by assembling these individual antennas altogether. The shape of the flnal antenna achieves both the impedance matching of ultra-wideband and the respective resonances at four rejection bands. Here, the mutual coupling among the band rejection elements is minimized, and the placement of the resonators is optimized. The fabricated antenna is compact enough to be integrated into the UWB system, and also the measured results show the validity of the proposed design strategy.

Design of the Ultrawideband Antenna with a Quadruple-Band Rejection Characteristics Using a Combination of the Complementary Split Ring Resonators

Substantial information leakage at PC monitors and TV systems arises in the form of unintentional emissions of high-speed digital video signals, such as DVI/HDMI. The information recovery rate from the emanated video signal varies depending on the SNR of the receiver system, which is placed a certain distance away. In this study, a situation in which the signal from a digital video system is intercepted is modeled using full-wave electromagnetic and circuit simulations. For a quantitative evaluation of the eavesdropping threat of display systems and the effect of its countermeasure, the readability of characters on a hypothetical screen as a function of the BER of the recovery signals is presented. It is clear that a decrease of the SNR of the received signal causes a deterioration of the digital video signal-recovery rate and consequently degrades the legibility of the characters on the intercepted screen. It is expected that these techniques can be useful for measurements and analyses of the effects of countermeasures, such as noise jamming or signal modulation, to prevent interceptions of digital video information.

A Compact MultiBand and Dual-Polarized Mobile Base-Station Antenna Using Optimal Array Structure

With digital devices, critical information can be left unsecured due to unintentional emissions from high-speed serial interfaces, such as digital visual interface, high-definition multimedia interface, universal serial bus, and mobile high-definition link. This study presents an analysis of the effectiveness of jamming to offset unwanted information leakage by means of transient electromagnetic pulse emanation surveillance technology from differential signal lines. For a quantitative analysis, a simplified simulation methodology is used to determine the reconstruction rate of the original digital signal as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio of the detected signal for various noise power levels. In addition, the effect of more realistic partial band-noise jamming is studied. It is shown that a jamming signal with a bandwidth ranging from 350 MHz to 3 GHz and with a relatively low level of power can effectively suppress the recovery of information obtained through radio frequency information emanation. This study shows that the band-noise-jamming method using correlated noise with a wide bandwidth is also useful as a countermeasure when considered within the electromagnetic compatibility limitations.

Noise-Jamming Effect as a Countermeasure Against TEMPEST During High-Speed Signaling

In this paper, a low-profile planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for ultrawideband (UWB) applications is proposed. The antenna consists of a PIFA and a ground plane with a slot. The addition of the slot not only improves the impedance matching of the PIFA but also forms an additional resonance. Therefore, the proposed antenna has a wideband characteristic covering the full UWB frequency range (3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz) and a stable and nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern. The antenna also has a smaller volume and thickness compared to previous UWB PIFAs.

Low-Profile Planar Inverted-F Antenna for Ultrawideband Applications

The ultra-wideband (UWB) spectrum available for commercial applications has offered us an opportunity to achieve high-speed wireless communications and high-accuracy location applications. As one of key research areas in UWB technology, a lot of innovative broadband and miniaturization techniques for UWB antennas have been greatly invented and developed for years. This paper reviews the development of UWB antenna design in the past decade. Starting with a brief introduction of the specific requirements and promising applications of UWB systems, the unique design challenges of UWB antennas are highlighted. Next, the important milestones of UWB antenna designs are briefed. After that, a variety of planar UWB antennas invented for broadband operation, miniaturization, and multiple functions are introduced. Last, the comments on the development of UWB antennas in future are shared.
