In principle, the application of monolithic catalysts to the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis can solve many of the problems related to the classical Fischer–Tropsch reactors, in particular concerning the necessity to operate with short diffusion distances and low pressure drops, preferably according to the ideal plug-flow behavior, while still maintaining a reasonable inventory of catalytic material in the reactor volume. The preparation of prototype cobalt-based catalysts, washcoated onto metallic structured supports with different geometries, is described herein, together with the evaluation of the catalytic properties of such systems in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis at industrially relevant process conditions (220–235 °C, 20 bar, 2.1 mo l H 2 /mo l CO , 5000 c m 3 ( STP ) CO + H 2 /h/ g cat ). Comparative tests with the same catalyst in the powdered form were also carried out at the same process conditions. It was found that the structured catalysts maintained the activity and the selectivity of the original powdered catalyst, provided that the washcoat thickness is sufficiently thin.

An exhaust gas purification catalyst includes: a lower catalyst layer that contains a ceria-zirconia mixed oxide having 50 to 70 mass% of CeO 2 and 5 mass% or more of Pr 2 O 3 and carries at least one of Pt and Pd; and an upper catalyst layer that contains at least zirconia and carries at least Rh, wherein the total amount of CeO 2 per liter of the carrier base is 15 to 30 g. Because the amount of CeO 2 is small, formation of H 2 S is suppressed and a high capability of adsorbing and releasing oxygen is brought out in spite of the small amount of CeO 2 .

In the present work, a microchannel reactor for autothermal reforming of methanol using a synthesized catalyst porous alumina support-CuO/ZnO mixed with ZrO2 sol washcoat has been developed and its fine structure and inner surface characterized. Experimentally, CuO/ZnO and alumina support with ZrO2 sol washcoat catalyst (catalyst slurries) nanoparticles is the catalytically active component of the microreactor. Catalyst slurries have been dried at 298 K for 5 h and then calcined at 623 K for 2 h to increase the surface area and specific pore structures of the washcoat catalyst. The surface area of BET N2 adsorption isotherms for the as-synthesized catalyst and catalyst/ZrO2 sol washcoat samples are 62 and 108 ± 2 m2g−1, respectively. The intensities of Cu content from XRD and XPS data indicate that Al2O3 with Cu species to form CuAl2O4. The EXAFS data reveals that the Cu species in washcoat samples have Cu-O bonding with a bond distance of 1.88 ± 0.02 A and the coordination number is 3.46 ± 0.05, respectively. Moreover, a hydrogen production rate of 2.16 L h−1 is obtained and the corresponding methanol conversion is 98% at 543 K using the CuO/ZnO with ZrO2 sol washcoat catalyst.

In the present invention, the combustion of particulates that have accumulated on a catalyst layer (7) proceeds with good efficiency, in both a rapid combustion region and a slow combustion region. A material of Rh-doped Ce-containing composite oxide particles supporting Pt and a material of composite particles supporting Pt are both present on the catalyst layer (7) of the exhaust gas flow path walls of a filter (1). The composite particles are formed by mixing and aggregating Ce-free and Zr-containing composite oxide particles and activated alumina particles.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain Ce-Zr-Al compound oxide usable as a catalyst material. SOLUTION: A mixed solvent composed of water and ethylene glycol is used when a slurry is prepared by mixture of powder of aluminum hydroxide with solution dissolving cerium acetate and zirconium acetate. The obtained slurry is transferred to an autoclave and heated under pressure to cause hydrothermal reaction. Thus, a slurry state boehmite carrying the cerium and the zirconium is obtained.
