A review of the environmental fate and effects of hazardous substances released from electrical and electronic equipments during recycling: Examples from China and India

The recycling of printed circuit boards in Guiyu, China, a village intensely involved in e-waste processing, may present a significant environmental and human health risk. To evaluate the extent of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) contamination from printed circuit board recycling, surface dust samples were collected from recycling workshops, adjacent roads, a schoolyard, and an outdoor food market. ICP-OES analyses revealed elevated mean concentrations in workshop dust (Pb 110 000, Cu 8360, Zn 4420, and Ni 1500 mg/kg) and in dust of adjacent roads (Pb 22 600, Cu 6170, Zn 2370, and Ni 304 mg/kg). Lead and Cu in road dust were 330 and 106, and 371 and 155 times higher, respectively, than non e-waste sites located 8 and 30 km away. Levels at the schoolyard and food market showed that public places were adversely impacted. Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) can transport a large range of ions, including toxic lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), across membranes. In this study, a total of 24 rats were divided into four groups for intragastrical perfusion treatment: control, Pb alone, Cd alone, and Pb + Cd. Pb and Cd contents in blood were detected, and the mRNA and protein levels of DMT1 were analyzed in the cerebellum, cortex, and hippocampus. Both Pb and Cd levels were elevated in all groups perfused with Pb and/or Cd, except for Pb level in the Cd-alone group (P 0.05). However, the DMT1 protein expression was significantly increased by 0.9-, 1.0-, and 1.1-fold in cerebellum, cortex, and hippocampus of the Pb + Cd group than in controls, respectively. Pb and Cd exposure can synergistically induce DMT1 protein synthesis and has implications for transportation of toxic ions in the developing rat’s brain.

Lead and Cadmium Synergistically Enhance the Expression of Divalent Metal Transporter 1 Protein in Central Nervous System of Developing Rats

Waf1 , MDM2, Ki67 and cyclin D1 proteins on TMA slides. In situ hybridization (ISH) targeting HPV gene was also used. Results: In ESCC samples, 18.3% (11/60) were revealed HPV16/18 E6 positive by IHC, while 40.0% (24/60) HPV positive by ISH; HPV16/18 E6 expression was significantly higher than that of control samples. In ESCC samples, the expressions of p53, p21 Waf1 , Cyclin D1, MDM2 and Ki67 were recorded in 60.0% (36/60), 40.0% (24/60), 51.7% (31/60), 65.0% (39/60) and 88.3% (53/60) cases respectively, In ESCC samples, p53, MDM2 and Ki67 expression correlated with the HPV16/18 E6 expression (p < 0.01), p21 Waf1 expression — with these of MDM2 and cyclin D1 (p < 0.01) whilst expression of Ki67 — with ESCC grade (p < 0.01). Conclusion: HPV might be one of etiological factor of esophageal carcinoma in Shantou, China. p53, MDM2 proteins may play important roles in the pathogenesis of HPV-associated ESCC.
