Radio frequency energy harvesting has become an interesting research area in the recent years. The energy harvesting circuit called rectenna mainly consists of an antenna and rectifier. In this paper an empirical rectenna model is designed for energy harvesting in the GSM900, 1800 band as well as 2.4GHz ISM band. A triple band symmetrical arm dipole antenna with seven stage voltage multiplier is usedto improve the overall efficiency. The measured results for prototype rectenna show good matching with the simulated results. The maximum efficiency of 32.5% is obtained for very low incident power density (e.g. ∼25μWatt/m2) in the GSM 900 band.

Design optimization and implementation of multiband rectenna for efficient radio frequency energy harvesting

In this paper, we propose the low-profile planar triple symmetric arms dipole antennas for wireless communication applications. Three symmetric arms are etched on the metallic layer of a single sided printed circuit board to form the planar dipole antenna. For different applications, we present two antennas based on similar design concepts. For the first antenna, it can be operated at 2.45/3.5/5.8 GHz, and for the second one, it can be operated at 0.9/1.8/2.45 GHz, respectively. The size parameters of symmetric arms are changed to design and fabricate the antenna operating at these specific frequencies. We use IE3D software to design the two triple-band planar antennas and choose the better parameters to manufacture the proposed ones. We also discuss about the influences of dimension parameter of the proposed antennas on the resonant frequencies and impedance bandwidths of our implementations. Proposed antennas are small in sizes, and they can be applicable in GSM, RFID and WLAN frequency bands.

Design of Triple Symmetric Arms Dipole Antenna for 900/1800/2450 MHz Applications

In this paper, a dual-frequency broadband patch antenna with matched load and capacitive patch is proposed for GSM/DCS application. It is based on common patch antenna. In order to achieve the 900/1800MHz dual-band performance and directional radiation, the matched load and capacitive patch are added into modified antenna. As simulated by HFSS13.0 software dual-frequency broadband is obtained. The impedance bandwidth are 90MHz and 200MHz respectively. The calculated results were confirmed by measurements on the prototype.

The energy harvesting unit i.e. the rectenna includes an antenna to collect the electromagnetic energy and rectifier to convert this energy to DC power. The multiband rectenna is preferred due to its ability to receive power in different frequency ranges which also increases the efficiency of the rectenna. In this paper, the performance different multiband rectennas are compared in terms of the rectenna efficiency, bandwidth of operation etc.
