TL;DR: Serotonin is an important link in TCA analgesia; noradrenaline has no effect and after long-term use, amitriptyline, which acts on serotonin, had an analgesic effect and this effect was blocked by pCPA.

TL;DR: Results showed that a generalized copper and magnesium deficiency were observed in the southeastern part of Turkey, however, zinc deficiency couldn’t be detected as far as the hair zinc values were concerned, although all of the subjects fell within the 50 percentile limits for their age-appropriate weights and heights.
Abstract: Zinc, copper, and magnesium concentrations in hair were measured in groups of children varying in one condition—protein-energy malnutrition, ricketts, thalassemia, malignancy, cardiac failure, or after prolonged infection and in healthy controls. As compared with controls, copper and magnesium concentrations were low in all groups, whereas higher values were obtained for hair zinc. These results showed that a generalized copper and magnesium deficiency were observed in the southeastern part of Turkey. However, zinc deficiency couldn’t be detected as far as the hair zinc values were concerned, although all of the subjects fell within the 50 percentile limits for their age-appropriate weights and heights.

TL;DR: A review of 14 patients with otogenic intracranial abscesses is reported to highlight that prompt diagnosis, appropriate therapy and careful monitoring can provide vastly improved results.
Abstract: The commonest cause of the intracranial abscesses collected prospectively during the last two years was chronic middle ear infection (73%). The diagnosis was based on the clinical history, otological investigations, contrast enhanced computerized tomography and surgical findings. The clinical presentation was characterized by chronic otitis with an exacerbation of otorrhea, otalgia or pain in the temporal region or headache with high fever, vomiting and nausea.

TL;DR: Of 156 patients referred in 1977-1987 for pulmonary hydatid cyst, nine were found to have simultaneous affection of the right lung and the liver, and nine were removed via the thoracotomy performed for removal of the lung cyst.
Abstract: Of 156 patients referred in 1977–1987 for pulmonary hydatid cyst, nine were found to have simultaneous affection of the right lung and the liver. The diagnosis of concomitant liver cyst was made from radiographic dumbbell elevation of the diaphragm (3 cases), by preoperative ultrasound scan and computed tomography in (5 cases), and by intraoperative palpation through the diaphragm (1 case). The hepatic cysts were removed via the thoracotomy performed for removal of the lung cyst in seven patients and via thoracolaparotomy in two. The postoperative course was satisfactory and no recurrence of cyst has been observed, although mebendazole was not given. In cases of hydatidosis of the right lung, preoperative search should be made for subdiaphragmatic concomitant liver cyst, which can be removed through the same thoracotomy.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that DMSO rapidly reduces the raised ICP, increases the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and improves the neurological course and outcome without affecting the systemic blood pressure and patient responsiveness except only in one patient.
Abstract: The results of a prospective study on the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in patients with severe closed head injuries causing brain edema and increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) are presented. 10 patients were selected and carefully analyzed according to Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores and severity of brain edema. The results demonstrate that DMSO rapidly reduces the raised ICP, increases the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and improves the neurological course and outcome without affecting the systemic blood pressure and patient responsiveness except only in one patient. We also point out that the rebound effect does not occur.

TL;DR: In this study serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels in children with congestive heart failure and after digoxin therapy, a significant increase in Zn levels and a significant decrease in Cu levels were observed.
Abstract: In this study serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels in children with congestive heart failure (CHF) were evaluated The mean serum Zn levels of the patients with CHF were 929 +/- 189 micrograms/100 ml, and they showed a significant decrease when compared to controls (p less than 005) The mean serum Cu levels, which were 1736 +/- 266 micrograms/100 ml, showed a significant increase when compared to controls (p less than 0001) After digoxin therapy, a significant increase in Zn levels and a significant decrease in Cu levels were observed

TL;DR: There is a correlation between an increase in intracranial pressure and a deficiency of hormonal secretion by the hypophysis and an empty sella turcica associated with primary amenorrhoea and delayed puberty.
Abstract: The role of intracranial pressure in the development and maintenance of the primary empty sella has been pointed out in the literature previously. The hormonal changes and clinical features have been evaluated in a 30 year-old female patient examined for a convexity meningioma and a 20 year-old patient examined for chronic hydrocephalus caused by cured meningitis. Histories and investigations revealed an empty sella turcica associated with primary amenorrhoea and delayed puberty. The removal of the convexity meningioma resulted in loss of amenorrhoea and a rise in plasma gonadotrophins. The establishment of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt did not bring about any changes in hormonal values and clinical features except the subjective headache disappeared. The importance of consideration of intracranial causes in patients who have delayed puberty or absence of menstrual history is briefly emphasized in light of the literature. Our data also demonstrated a correlation between an increase in intracranial pressure and a deficiency of hormonal secretion by the hypophysis.

TL;DR: Cases treated for peripheral vascular injuries associated with fractures between the years of 1977 and 1988 in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the Dicle University, Faculty of Medicine, were reviewed retrospectively.
Abstract: Sixty-seven cases treated for peripheral vascular injuries associated with fractures between the years of 1977 and 1988 in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the Dicle University, Faculty of Medicine, were reviewed retrospectively. The cause of injury was blunt trauma in 37 cases (55%) and penetrating wounds in the others, 29 gunshot injuries and one case with a stab wound. The maintenance of vessel continuity was aimed at in all patients. The ratio of limb amputation was 13% in patients operated upon within the first 8 hours after the injury. The same ratio was 39% in cases where the surgical intervention was delayed beyond 8 hours.

TL;DR: In this article, the water proton T1 in human blood diluted by its own plasma was measured with a FT-NMR spectrometer operating at 60MHz for protons.
Abstract: The water proton T1 in human blood diluted by its own plasma was measured with a FT-NMR spectrometer operating at 60MHz for protons. A linear relationship (with a correlation of 0.99) was found between the 1/T1 and hemoglobin content(Hb) in the blood. The exchange of water between the extracellular plasma and the intracellular Hb in blood is known to satisfy the fast chemical exchange conditions, and the decay of magnetization in blood is reported to have a single exponential. Therefore, the obtained relationship should represent fast chemfcal intracellular Hb and the extrace exchange between the lular plasma.
