TL;DR: In this article, a bootstrapped variable attenuator is described, which is a controlled impedance device, formed by parallel connected bipolar transistors and a network so applying a control signal to their bases that, as the control signal increases, the transistors commence to conduct progressively.
Abstract: A controlled impedance device such as an attenuator is formed by parallel connected bipolar transistors and a network so applying a control signal to their bases that, as the control signal increases, the transistors commence to conduct progressively. A bootstrapped variable attenuator is formed by a variable attenuator connected in series with an impedance between the output and input of a high input impedance amplifier.

TL;DR: In this article, the outputs of two circuit paths, connected to an input terminal, are combined by a variable combining means which responds to a signal level in the circuit to vary the proportions in which the two paths contribute to the output signal.
Abstract: Compressor and expander circuits are constructed by combining the outputs of two circuit paths, both connected to an input terminal. The combining is effected by a variable combining means which responds to a signal level in the circuit to vary the proportions in which the two circuit paths contribute to the output signal.
