TL;DR: In this paper, the input linkages of manufacturing projects in Ireland which have been grant-aided under the New Industries programme are analyzed at two spatial scales: (a) the national economy; and (b) the local area within a twenty-mile radius of the plant.
Abstract: This paper analyses the input linkages of manufacturing projects in Ireland which have been grant-aided under the New Industries programme. The Hirschman concept of linkages is adopted and the propensity of individual enterprises to purchase inputs is analysed at two spatial scales: (a) the national economy; and (b) the local area within a twenty-mile radius of the plant. Econometric methods are used to test a series of hypotheses at plant level, and implications for industrial and regional policies are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report results from a nationwide study, based on a representative sample in the Republic of Ireland, which is part of a harmonised study of subjective social indicators which has been carried out in eight member countries of the European Community.
Abstract: The present paper reports results from a nationwide study, based on a representative sample in the Republic of Ireland It is part of a harmonised study of subjective social indicators which has been carried out in eight member countries of the European Community The data, which were obtained by survey techniques, are largely subjective or perceptual in nature However, objective data were also obtained, thus permitting direct comparisons, in many cases, between objective conditions and subjective measures related to housing and neighbourhood to determine which characteristics were most highly predictive of overall satisfaction with housing and overall satisfaction with neighbourhood In addition, the relationships between housing and neighbourhood variables and more global attitudinal variables (ie, life satisfaction and anomia) were explored

TL;DR: O'Farrell and O'Loughlin this article analyzed the services linkages of manufacturing projects in Ireland which have been grant-aided under the New Industries (NI) programme.
Abstract: O'Farrell P. N. and O'Loughlin B. (1981) The impact of new industr enterprises in Ireland: an analysis of service linkages, Reg. Studies 15, 439–458. This paper analyses the services linkages of manufacturing projects in Ireland which have been grant-aided under the New Industries (NI) programme. Evidence concerning the external control and autonomy of subsidiaries is presented together with details of sources for a variety of services. Data summarizing the flows of service payments to the major towns is presented. The propensity of individual plants to allocate Irish service payments to their local area is analysed within an hypothesis-testing framework at establishment level, and, finally, the implications for industrial and regional policies are discussed.
