TL;DR: In this article, the basic equations describing the dynamics of closed-cycle gas turbines are given, and a method for solving them by means of a digital computer is presented, and the known actions of power control (changing the gas inventory and opening a bypass) are investigated with regard to their dynamics.
Abstract: The solution of problems concerning safety and control of gas turbines demands the ability of precalculating the dynamics of the whole plant. The dynamic behavior of nuclear closed-cycle gas turbines is mainly determined by the gas volumes in the ducts and apparatuses, the relatively great thermal inertias of the reactor and the heat exchangers, and by the inertia moment of the rotor. In the paper the basic equations, describing the dynamics, and a method for solving them by means of a digital computer are given. A comparison between calculation and measurement demonstrates the sufficiency of the theory. The known actions of power control (changing the gas inventory and opening a by-pass) are investigated with regard to their dynamics. A special power-speed controller which has proved successful in the closed-cycle air turbines is explained. Finally, the results of a calculation are discussed which show the control action of a closed-cycle gas turbine controlled by an isostatic speed controller.
