Abstract: This paper reports about renovation of the Otani Bridge on the Chugoku Expressway—a system of a three-span non-continuous plate girder bridge. In recent years, such severe damage and deterioration in the existing RC floor slabs in the bridge has become visible that it was decided to renovate the precast PC floor slabs. Since at the Otani Bridge, closing traffic for the full width of the road turned out to be difficult during slab replacement, the solution we adopted was a method called “Lane-by-Lane Replacement of Floor Slabs” in which, for example, one of the two in-bound lines is closed to traffic, and the slabs are replaced with the other lane kept open. This new system of replacement involved issues in terms of structural safety for the lanes in service as well as the installation and durability of a provisional protection fence, including the necessity of shortening the lane traffic control period. This paper reports about the tests and surveys prior to the construction, results of review, and about the site construction.
