Abstract: In this paper we investigate wavelet transform based coding of multi-channel (stereophonic) digital audio signals. Our goal is the derivation and implementation of efficient coding and interpolation methods in the context of data transmission over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. The coding algorithm is designed to exhibit robustness with respect to packet losses due to traffic congestion. An important concept is that of “layered coding” where the output of the encoder is divided into cells of varying significance such that when the network is congested cells of lower priority will be dropped. The decoder at the receiver must be capable to implement packet substitution to maintain reconstructed signal quality at an acceptable level. The high degree of correlation between co-channel signals provides significant advantages for layered coding and packet substitution methods applicable to multi-channel audio signals. We first decompose the wideband stereophonic signal into sub-bands which we analyze with respect to their relative energy and then separate into high- and low-priority data streams. We perform statistical analysis of subband signals generated through multi-resolution decomposition of wideband stereophonic signals We study the performance of the proposed algorithm under complete low priority cell loss conditions and report on preliminary results of these simulations.
