TL;DR: In this paper, ground fault circuit interrupter components are enclosed within a housing having terminals for connection of the wires of a line cord extending from an electrical appliance or other electrical load for which ground fault protection is provided.
Abstract: Ground fault circuit interrupter components, including a fault-sensing circuit and a relay, are enclosed within a housing having terminals for connection of the wires of a line cord extending from an electrical appliance or other electrical load for which ground fault protection is provided. Standard plug blades extend from the housing for insertion into a conventional electrical receptacle to connect the load to a source of electrical power, the circuit interrupter components being interposed between the wire connection terminals and the blades. The housing configuration and assembly provides an essentially waterproof enclosure for all elements between the line cord and plug blades which is preferably divided into two discrete compartments, one containing the wire connection terminals and the other the GFCI components. Thus, if the one compartment should develop a leak, the water-tight integrity of the other is still maintained. The line cord extends into the module through a resilient sealing grommet which may conveniently be interchanged with different size grommets to accommodate line cords of various diameters without changing any other components of the module. Assembly is simplified and facilitated by providing a one-piece body member, open at both ends, and connecting all other components as a single assembly for insertion into the body and fastening with screws at each end to sealably close the body openings.

TL;DR: In this article, a pair of separate electrical switches are disclosed, each including a fixed contact supported by and electrically connected to a printed circuit board, and a movable contact comprising a deflectable portion of a strip of springy conducting material.
Abstract: A pair of separate electrical switches are disclosed, each including a fixed contact supported by and electrically connected to a printed circuit board, and a movable contact comprising a deflectable portion of a strip of springy, conducting material. A single such strip is supported by and electrically connected to terminals of the circuit board in a central portion of the strip, the opposite end portions forming the movable switch contacts. A pair of push rods are carried by spaced, flexible, rubber boots which position the push rods and move them axially to urge the respective ends of the strip to a deflected position which moves one strip end away from the associated pin, opening a normally closed switch, and moves the other strip end to contact the pin, closing a normally open switch. The electrical and physical configuration of the switches is particularly suited to use as test and reset switches of a ground fault circuit interrupter device, in which context the invention is disclosed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the relay coil is used as a series pass element in the feed circuit to reduce power dissipation and heat, decreasing the likelihood of contact chatter or welding, providing increased protection for the switching transistor without increasing relay contact opening time, and providing fail-safe operation for all common types of failures in the protective circuitry.
Abstract: A circuit including a differential transformer for sensing an imbalance in the current flow through hot and neutral wires connected between a power source and load and a relay operable to break the connection in response to an imbalance of predetermined magnitude. The two movable relay contacts are placed directly in the two wires and are normally open, being closed when power is supplied to the relay coil, the input side of which is connected to a switching transistor. Features include connection of the relay coil as a series pass element in the feed circuit to reduce power dissipation and heat, decreasing the likelihood of contact chatter or welding, providing increased protection for the switching transistor without increasing relay contact opening time, and providing fail-safe operation for all of the more common types of failures in the protective circuitry. Open neutral and grounded neutral protection are also provided.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for heterologous cloning of a gene encoding α-amylase, protease, amyloglucosidase or glucose isomerase was proposed.
Abstract: A method for heterologous cloning of a gene encoding α-amylase, protease, amyloglucosidase or glucose isomerase. The method involves the use of a bifunctional plasmid which can replicate in both E. coli and B. subtilis, and contains at least two selectable markers. A gene fragment for the enzyme is incorporated into the plasmid, leaving at least one functional selectable marker and a nonfunctional marker, producing a mixture of recombinant hybrid plasmids and the original bifunctional plasmid. This mixture is incorporated into E. coli microorganisms and transformants seiected. The transformants which contain the recombinant plasmid are identified, and plasmid DNA extracted. The plasmid DNA is used to transform Bacillus host microorganisms and transformants containing the recombinant plasmids are selected by means of the functional selectable marker.
