TL;DR: In situ testing of bridges requires considerable expertise and entails heavy expenditure as mentioned in this paper, and the objectives of the tests may vary from being merely routine tests to diagnostic tests in order to locate the source of distress in the structure.
Abstract: In situ testing of bridges demands considerable expertise and entails heavy expenditure. The objectives of the tests may vary from being merely routine tests to diagnostic tests in order to locate the source of distress in the structure. An attempt is made in this paper to discuss briefly the objectives of the tests and the instrumentation usually employed. Salient features of the tests on concrete bridge superstructures reported in the last decade are summarised. Discussion on the evaluation criteria and recommendations for further work are also included.

TL;DR: In this article, a method is proposed to measure the fringe order continuously as a function of density or transmittivity of the photographic negative, which is traced by a microdensitometer.
Abstract: A method is proposed to measure the fringe order continuously as a function of density or transmittivity fo the photographic negative, which is traced by a microdensitometer. The densities and transmittances of the fil, are either recorded by a potentiometric recorder or through a digital display. These digital values could be fed itno a computer for further automatic data processing. A typical problem of analysing isochromatic fringes from photoelasticitiy is described.
