TL;DR: The modular lighting procedure as mentioned in this paper is effected by a headlight containing a number of separate light sources such as LEDs, each producing a partial beam emitted in a predetermined direction, and one or more of the light sources can be modulated to control the light flow in its partial beam.
Abstract: The modular lighting procedure is effected by a headlight containing a number of separate light sources, such as LEDs, each producing a partial beam emitted in a predetermined direction. The partial beams overlap to create the full headlight beam, and one or more of the light sources can be modulated to control the light flow in its partial beam. When the headlight is on a detection system such as a thermal, infra-red or video camera picks out critical zones (V1, V2, P) in the illuminated scene ahead, notably people's heads, vehicles travelling in the same or opposite direction, and road signs, and an electronic circuit adjusts the partial beams accordingly.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors recast the classical Sears' problem of calculating the lift fluctuations, due to the impingement of upstream disturbances on the leading edge of a flat-plate airfoil, by reversing the mean flow carrying the velocity disturbances.
Abstract: The classical Sears’ problem of calculating the lift fluctuations, due to the impingement of upstream disturbances on the leading edge of a flat-plate airfoil, is recast in the present paper, essentially by reversing the mean flow carrying the velocity disturbances. The latter are considered to interact with the trailing edge when being evacuated downstream, instead of impinging on the leading edge from upstream, and the Kutta condition is ignored. A compressible solution is proposed, which is a straightforward adaptation of Amiet’s formulation, dedicated to the calculation of the far-field noise. The first application is the narrow-band vortex-shedding noise associated with the von Karman street shed in the wake of a thick plate. For this, a convection speed lower than the surrounding flow speed is accounted for. Once the PSD and the spanwise correlation length of the transverse velocity fluctuations in the near wake are known as input data, the model is shown to predict sound levels, which agree well with the measurements. The second application is the modeling of the potential-interaction noise generated as rotor blades operate in the flow distortion caused by a radial cylinder placed at a short downstream distance. The distortion and the blade loading harmonics are derived analytically. The shrouded tail rotor of an helicopter is investigated as a special case. The effect of a variable blade pitch angle, related to a variable thrust, is assessed. A noise increase by 0.4 dB per degree is found, compatible with previously reported measurements. Both test cases suggest that the proposed model is a reliable pre-design tool for configurations in which the unsteady aerodynamics of blades clearly results from downstream disturbances.

TL;DR: In this article, aeroacoustic measurements in the large anechoic wind tunnel of Ecole Centrale de Lyon were extended to velocity measurements by hot-wire probes in the nozzle jet and in the vicinity of a Controlled Diffusion airfoil.
Abstract: The aeroacoustic measurements in the large anechoic wind tunnel of Ecole Centrale de Lyon, which previously focused on the wall pressure distribution and the far-field acoustic pressure, are extended to velocity measurements by hot-wire probes in the nozzle jet and in the vicinity of a Controlled Diffusion airfoil. The present work focuses on the flow conditions corresponding to a Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord length Re c = 1.6×10 5 and a geometric angle of attack α g of 8°. Midspan measurements were achieved at the exit plane of the wind tunnel nozzle upstream of the test airfoil and in a large eddy simulation domain that was embedded in the potential core around the airfoil mockup. The inlet measurements by a single hot-wire probe provided insight into the free-stream turbulence intensity upstream of the profile. The X-probe measurements on the upper and lower computational boundaries show the overall deflection of the jet potential core by the cambered airfoil. These are compared to previous Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes predictions. The X-probe measurements in the airfoil wake provide information on the development of the airfoil boundary layer and the resulting wake after separation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors extended the Cartesian incompressible RANS solver with immersed boundaries to include conjugate heat transfer modeling and used for the simulation of the electrical motor of an automotive engine cooling fan system.
Abstract: The Cartesian incompressible RANS solver with immersed boundaries, IBRANS, recently developed at Stanford, has been extended to include conjugate heat transfer modeling and used for the simulation of the electrical motor of an automotive engine cooling fan system. Such applications are particularly challenging, as they involve very complex geometries with tight tolerances and rotating parts. The new conjugate heat transfer capability of IBRANS has been verified on natural and forced convection flows. The former involves flows in enclosures around a sphere and electronic chips. The latter focuses on heated cylinders for Reynolds numbers covering flow regimes ranging for a steady laminar flow to unsteady turbulent flows. First three-dimensional simulations of the flow and heat transfer within the complete electrical motor are presented
