TL;DR: However, I just can’t bring myself to throw away the very old handwritten glossaries from the pre-laptop days, so if I were offered such a meeting I would remember that I have a glossary somewhere in that big loose-leaf binder called 'miscellaneous'.
Abstract: However, I just can’t bring myself to throw away the very old handwritten glossaries from the pre-laptop days when I didn't bother to type them simply didn't have time with small children to care for or they dealt with one-off subjects so varied in nature that I can’t classify them in any way other than ‘miscellaneous’. Who knows, I might just get a second meeting on cork trees, water filters or cross-stitching! It seems to me that if I were offered such a meeting I would remember that I have a glossary somewhere in that big loose-leaf binder called 'miscellaneous'.

Abstract: The Eye Drive is a microfilm solution that connects to a stand-alone or networked Windows based PC. It allows you to take a 16mm ANSI microfilm cartridge or 3M cartridge, insert it into the drive, select a film image or series of images, and bring them up on the screen. Then you can print, save, merge, batch scan, or distribute the images electronically. It’s the best way to manage microfilm information.

TL;DR: The knowledge that one has heart disease is frightening and so is admission to a coronary care unit, but the nurse there, with her explanations and constant attendance, is able to reduce the patient's anxiety and provide a sense of security.
Abstract: perience? Although still completing an extensive assessment of the reactions of 100 patients admitted to a CCU with the diagnosis of proved or suspected MI, we have collected a great deal of information which emphasizes the outstanding role played by the nurse in alleviating these patients' psychologic distress. Among the sources of psychologic distress encountered by patients stricken with serious illness, two general categories can be indicated: those arising from the illness itself and those arising from the hospital setting. First of all, the major psychologic threat to the patient is derived from the meaning of his illness. This is particularly true with patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction. As the nurse knows well, the coronary patient, whether he expresses it or not, al-

TL;DR: Patients were instructed the evening before elective abdominal surgery in the usual techniques of deep breathing, coughing, and exercising, and told what to expect pre- and post-operativel?
Abstract: This author instructed 24 patients, in groups of four at a time, in the usual techniques of deep breathing, coughing, and exercising, and told them what to expect pre- and post-operativel?. All were instructed the evening before elective abdominal surgery. Each group session lasted 30 minutes. Postoperatively, all but one patient were enthusiastic, the patients did seem to recall and use the instructions they received and some side benefits resulted from the group participation.

Abstract: Because patient teaching cannot always be done on a one-to-one basis, this nurse decided to teach arthritic patients in a group about their disease. Eighteen patients met with a multidisciplinary team for a series of eight classes in which new information was presented, comfort measures demonstrated, and quack “cures” discussed.

Abstract: Nurses, like other professional women, took up cigarette smoking some years ago at a greater rate than women in general, but they have also quit at a greater rate. The National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health reports here what proportion have quit, what nurses believe is their responsibility to patients in regard to smoking, and what relationships they think exists between smoking and certain dis-

TL;DR: If the authors really believe teaching is an integral part of nursing, then each staff nurse must assume an individual responsibility for initiating teaching plans.
Abstract: Patient teaching is a dynamic process that must begin with an assessment of patient problems. When teaching is viewed in terms of helping patients solve their own problems, it includes more than the obvious teaching areas, such as colostomy care. It becomes a continuous process of helping patients to cope with difficulties in their environment. If we really believe teaching is an integral part of nursing, then each staff nurse must assume an individual responsibility for initiating teaching plans.

Abstract: In December 1966 the hemodialysis unit of the New York Veterans Administration Hospital was opened with one patient and one machine in one private room. The unit soon expanded to 3 patients in 2 rooms, and then to one large room with a capacity for 9 patients at a time, using a central delivery system for the dialysate. We now treat 16 patients per week on the unit. Patients are dialyzed twice weekly for eight hours each time and so the nurse is with the patient for prolonged periods. There may be difficult times as when technical or physiological complications arise. Problems are discussed at the bedside with the patient participating. Nurses and patients develop close relationships and nurses increasingly dread a fatal complication, especially one that might be due to hu-
