Abstract: The recent widespread use of governmental and defense subpoenas for newsmen's testimony and films has posed a grave threat to the ability of the press to gather and disseminate the news. This Comment explores the need for a newsman's privilege and ,the legal precedent upon which such a privilege would be based. The possible scope of the privilege is examined in connection with governmental and defense subpoenas and court orders in private litigation.
