Abstract: Principals are held accountable for student achievement although most studies find that they have no direct effect on it. In this study we tested a model hypothesizing that principals contribute to student achievement indirectly through teacher commitment and beliefs about their collective capacity. Path analysis of data from 205 elementary schools supported this hypothesis. Schools with higher levels of transformational leadership had higher collective teacher efficacy, greater teacher commitment to school mission, school community, and school ‐ community partnerships, and higher student achievement. Increasing the transformational leadership practices in schools makes a small but practically important contribution to overall student achievement. Key words: teacher efficacy, transformational leadership, path analysis, grade 3 and 6 Les directions d’ecoles sont imputables au regard du rendement scolaire sur lequel elles n’ont aucun effet direct d’apres la plupart des etudes. Les auteurs ont teste un modele selon lequel la direction d’ecole contribuerait indirectement au rendement scolaire a travers l’implication des enseignants et leurs facons de percevoir leur capacite collective. L’analyse acheminatoire (path analysis) de donnees issues de 205 ecoles primaires vient etayer cette hypothese. Les ecoles presentant un niveau plus eleve de leadership transformationnel se distinguaient par une plus grande efficacite du corps enseignant, une implication plus grande des enseignants vis ‐ a ‐ vis de la mission de l’ecole, de l’equipe ‐ ecole, des partenariats ecole ‐ communaute et un meilleur rendement scolaire. L’amelioration d’un ecart ‐ type des methodes propres au leadership transformationnel dans les ecoles augmenterait le rendement scolaire en lecture, en ecriture et en mathematiques en 3 e et en 6 e annees de 0,22 d’un ecart type. Abstract: Teachers ʹ characterizations of citizenship education pedagogy in Canada and England were explored in this study. Preferred learning goals reflected liberal/civic republican tendencies represented in contemporary conceptions of citizenship education. Preferred pedagogical practices exposed an array of teaching methods, assessment approaches, and classroom environment considerations. Eclectic and distinctive tendencies were noted in relation to the goals given priority and practices used to facilitate student learning. These tendencies cut across various curricular perspectives (e.g. transmission, transactional, and transformational), privileging (and neglecting) certain curricular learning goals and signaling a level of ambiguity between ‘what teachers say’ and ‘what teachers do.’ Key words: citizenship education, pedagogy, curriculum perspectives, instruction Cet article porte sur les definitions que donnent les enseignants de l’education a la citoyennete au Canada et en Angleterre. Les objectifs d’apprentissage privilegies refletent les tendances liberales ou republicaines representees dans les conceptions actuelles de l’education a la citoyennete. Parmi les pratiques pedagogiques preferees figure tout un eventail de methodes d’enseignement et d’evaluation ainsi que de considerations ayant trait a la classe. L’auteur fait etat de tendances eclectiques et bien definies en lien avec les buts auxquels on donne priorite et les methodes utilisees pour faciliter l’apprentissage. Abstract: The integration of traditional (offline and face ‐ to ‐ face) and virtual ethnographic methods can aid researchers interested in developing understandings of relationships between online and offline cultural life, and examining the diffuse and sometimes global character of youth resistance. In constructing this argument, I have used insights from studies on youth activism and the rave subculture. These studies also informed my central theoretical suggestion: that an approach to research underscored by a sensitivity to everyday experiences and the power structures framing these experiences can (still) be a powerful guide for understanding flows and circuits of resistance in Internet ‐ influenced cultures. Abstract: This article is a critical discourse analysis of coverage in the National Post and the Globe and Mail concerning the Organisation for Economic Co ‐ operation and Development’s 2000 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). In this article, I have shown how numbers are interpreted through statistics to create a reality and analyzed the mechanisms used, through which information is constructed and reconstructed by and for the media. I have also explored how diverse voices are represented. The discourses of neoliberalism were embedded in the coverage of the PISA results and discourses that accentuated regional stereotypes were in use. Abstract: Although the mainstream media and education systems are key institutions that perpetuate various social inequalities, spaces exist—both within and beyond these institutions—where adults and youth resist dominant, damaging representations and improvise new images. In this article, we address why educational researchers and educators should attend closely to popular media and democratizing media production. We analyze and illustrate strategies for engaging with and critiquing corporate news media and creating counter ‐ narratives. We explore media education as a key process for engaging people in dialogue and action as well as present examples of how popular culture texts can be excavated as rich pedagogical resources. Abstract: This article examines the representation of conflict, diversity, peace, and justice issues in selected mandated curriculum guidelines, grades 1 ‐ 10, for three Canadian provinces. These curricula, grounded in prevailing assumptions, reflect political will and influence resource availability for teaching. Prominent among them is a neutral discourse invoking Canadian ideals of multiculturalism that emphasizes harmony, marginalizes conflict and critical viewpoints, and presents injustices as past or virtually resolved. Because relatively little attention is given to actual instances of social conflict, violence, or marginalization, these curricula limit students’ opportunities to practice with constructive democratic conflict and peacebuilding. Ces programmes, qui reposent sur des theories implicites courantes, refletent une volonte politique et orientent les ressources disponibles pour l’enseignement. L’un des principaux postulats est un discours neutre qui invoque les ideaux canadiens du multiculturalisme. Privilegiant l’harmonie, ce discours marginalise les conflits et les points de vue critiques et presente les injustices comme des realites du passe ou comme etant en voie de reglement. Abstract: Many citizens have disengaged from participation in civic life with a resulting call for new initiatives in civic education. Many of these programs have had little research on citizens’ prior conceptions of participation. In this article, we provide a map of the conceptions of civic participation, specifically voting, held by two groups: recent African immigrants to Canada and native ‐ born Canadians. Youth understand voting as a key element of democratic governance, a hard won democratic right, and a duty of democratic citizenship yet most indicate they do not plan to vote because voting does not make a difference. Abstract: The rapid evolution of online, independent journalism affords educators an opportunity to increase students' understanding of the nature and power of the news media. Drawing from Habermas's theories of the role of the public sphere in democratic discourse, the author, as founder of an online news publication, traces trends in concentrated corporate ownership of Canadian media, new forms of online journalism and their democratic potential and limitations, and ways in which educators can help students deconstruct and participate in traditional and newer forms of news media.

Abstract: In this article, we explored ways youth, traditionally silenced, engaged with popular culture to voice experiences and challenge dominant narratives of public schools and daily lives. We also considered how educators use popular culture as critical pedagogy with inner city youth. Through ethnographic bricolage and case study methods, and drawing from cultural studies and critical pedagogy, we have presented two case studies. One study highlighted how a school used popular theatre and critical literacy to connect with students’ experiences. The second focused on narratives in students’ rap songs. These case studies highlight the risks, challenges, and potential for building respectful and reciprocal relationships with students. Key words: rap music, popular theatre, ethnography, bricolage, case study, schools, poverty Dans cet article, les auteurs analysent comment des jeunes, d’ordinaire reduits au silence, utilisent la culture populaire pour exprimer leur vecu et contester les discours dominants des ecoles publiques. Ils etudient egalement comment des educateurs ont recours a la culture populaire comme outil de pedagogie critique aupres de jeunes de quartiers defavorises. Utilisant un montage ethnographique et s’appuyant sur des etudes culturelles et la pedagogie critique, ils presentent deux etudes de cas. L’une met en relief comment une ecole s’est servie du theâtre populaire et de la litteratie critique pour faire le lien avec les experiences des eleves. L’autre est axee sur les narrations des eleves dans des chansons « rap » de leur cru. Ces etudes de cas montrent bien les risques, les defis et les possibilites d’etablir des liens reciproques et respectueux avec les eleves. Abstract: The meanings attached to national identity are the most salient citizenship issue today. We analyzed over 300 written responses of Canadian high school youth, of immigrant and non ‐ immigrant origins, to the question of “What does it mean for me to be/become a Canadian?” The participants related a greater sense of national identity than of ethnic and/or supranational belonging. Youth of immigrant origins used a discourse of becoming and understand multiculturalism to recognize ethnic identities associated with Charter rights. The findings are contextualized in social unrest in other countries, a global migration pattern, and new forms of economic, social, and political domination. Keywords: Canadian identity, immigrant youth, ethnic identity, changing economic conditions Les divers sens donnes a la notion d’identite nationale, telle est la question la plus importante de l’heure en matiere de citoyennete. Les auteures ont analyse plus de 300 reponses ecrites de jeunes Canadiens au secondaire, immigrants et non ‐ immigrants, a la question : « Que veut dire etre ou devenir Canadien pour moi ? ». Les participants font etat d’un plus grand sentiment d’appartenance au pays qu’a des groupes ethniques ou supranationaux. Les jeunes immigres adoptent un discours axe sur le devenir et considerent le multiculturalisme comme la reconnaissance des identites ethniques dans le cadre de la Charte canadienne des droits et libertes. Les resultats de l’etude sont mis en contexte : agitation sociale dans d’autres pays, mouvements migratoires a l’echelle mondiale et nouvelles formes de domination politique, sociale et economique. Abstract: The male youth in our study used video games to resist institutional authority, hegemonic masculinity, and femininity. Videogame play offered them a safe place to resist authority, which was often limited to small acts of adolescent defiance that could limit their future ability to engage thoughtfully and critically in the world. This resistance shaped and reinforced their identity formation and supported their resistance to traditional literacy practices they considered more feminine. Adults were absent from their play; hence they had no mentorship in critiquing the worldview presented in videogames. Key words: masculinity, identity, critical literacy, alternative literacies Dans cette etude, les garcons se sont servis de jeux video pour resister a l’autorite institutionnelle ainsi qu’a une representation hegemonique de la masculinite et de la la feminite. Ces jeux leur offraient un espace dans lequel ils pouvaient en toute securite opposer une resistance a l’autorite sous la forme de modestes gestes de defi typiques des adolescents. Ces gestes risquaient toutefois de limiter leur capacite future de s’engager dans le monde avec serieux et en faisant preuve d’un esprit critique. Cette resistance a faconne et renforce leur identite et concordait avec leur contestation des methodes de litteratie traditionnelles qu’ils consideraient comme plutot feminines. Les adultes etaient absents lors de leurs jeux ; les jeunes n’avaient donc pas de mentors pour critiquer la vision du monde presentee dans les jeux video. Abstract: In this article, we examine the CBC/Radio ‐ Canada series, Canada: A People’s History , for its use of empathy, specifically with regard to its portrayal of Aboriginal people. We call the empathy promoted in the series, emotive empathy, and compare it to the concept of historical empathy constructed by researchers in history education. The emotive empathy employed in this series, while adequate for public audiences, is not sufficient for history classrooms because it lacks a cognitive dimension. We discuss implications for using the series, and by extension, other instructional resources, to promote the development of historical empathy. Les auteurs qualifient d’empathie emotive l’empathie promue dans la serie et la compare au concept d’empathie historique developpe par les chercheurs qui etudient l’enseignement de l’histoire. L’empathie emotive utilisee dans cette serie, bien qu’adequate pour le grand public, ne l’est pas pour les cours d’histoire parce qu’il manque alors une dimension cognitive. Abstract: This study identified student and school ‐ level factors associated with student achievement on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), an examination that includes a student questionnaire examining home literacy practices. Linked student and school contextual data enabled the use of hierarchical linear modeling to complete the analyses and examine both student and school level effects. Fourteen student and three school level variables were found to be associated with students’ reading achievement and twelve student and two school level variables were associated with writing. Significant variations between schools were also found for students with individualized education plans, English as a second language, or previous eligibility on the OSSLT. Key words: hierarchical linear modeling, literacy testing, achievement, education factors Dans cette etude, les auteurs ont identifie les facteurs eleves et niveaux scolaires associes au rendement scolaire dans le Test de competences linguistiques de l’Ontario, un examen qui comprend un questionnaire pour les eleves au sujet des habitudes en matiere de litteratie a la maison. Des donnees reliees aux eleves et au contexte scolaire ont permis l’utilisation d’une modelisation lineaire hierarchique en vue de completer les analyses et d’etudier les effets quant aux eleves et aux niveaux scolaires. Les auteurs ont etabli que quatorze variables ayant trait aux eleves et trois ayant trait aux niveaux scolaires etaient associees au rendement des eleves en matiere de lecture et que douze variables ayant trait aux eleves et deux ayant trait aux niveaux scolaires etaient associees a l’ecriture. Des ecarts importants entre les ecoles ont egalement ete notes chez les eleves ayant des programmes pedagogiques sur mesure, inscrits en anglais langue seconde ou deja admissibles au Test de competences linguistiques des ecoles secondaires de l’Ontario. Abstract: In this article I have outlined several modes of resistance to popular media and dominant cultural narratives suggested in three Canadian educational programs with a focus on social and environmental change. Exploring discourses of awareness, inactive caring, thinking differently, lifestyle activism, impacting the world, and contingent agency, I propose that program characteristics and issues of class may affect students’ abilities to (un)make themselves as media consumers and producers—as ethical and political global citizens. Abstract: Through a discussion of two videos – The Take (Naomi Klein & Avi Lewis, 2004), and a student project – I argue that media education can further the role of youth as critically engaged, democratic citizens most effectively when educators develop students’ capacity for reflection and self ‐ expression through engagement with those power structures that limit such acts. Media literacy’s democratic promise thus evolves from the productive tensions that arise from educators’ desire to protect and prepare students to live in a media saturated society. Of late, media education has strayed from this objective. I suggest that this move is not necessary. En matiere d’egalite des chances, la performance du systeme scolaire actuel au Canada laisse a desirer. Abstract: The idea of media literacy prompts an increasingly divisive debate between educators who wish to protect children from the commercialization of global markets and those who challenge critical media studies as misguided, outdated, and ineffective. We have provided a historical overview of changing conceptions of media literacy as preparation and protection in market society, arguing that contemporary concerns about children’s fast food marketing and sedentary lifestyles call for new approaches to the education of citizen ‐ consumers in a risk society. Our case study demonstrates that a media education programme can provide scaffolding for children’s critical thinking about their sedentary lifestyles and media consumption. La notion d’initiation aux medias suscite un debat de plus en plus anime entre, d’une part, les intervenants educatifs qui desirent proteger les enfants contre la mondialisation de la culture commerciale et, d’autre part, ceux pour qui les etudes critiques des medias sont peu judicieuses, perimees et inefficaces. Les auteurs presentent un survol historique de l’evolution des facons de voir l’initiation aux medias comme outil de preparation et de protection dans une societe marchande et soutiennent que les inquietudes actuelles au sujet du marketing des repas ‐ minute aupres des enfants et des modes de vie sedentaire requierent de nouvelles approches de l’education des consommateurs ‐ citoyens dans une societe a risque. L’etude de cas presentee ici demontre qu’un programme d’initiation aux medias peut permettre de charpenter l’esprit critique des enfants au sujet de leur mode de vie sedentaire et de leur consommation des medias. Abstract: Fola and Titi Soboyejo were so eager to cast their ballots in the January 23rd Canadian Federal election that they spent thousands of dollars to make it happen. The two Nigerian immigrants to Canada passed their citizenship test in the summer of 2004, but because their hometown of Yellowknife has such a small population, it holds swearing‐in ceremonies only once each year. That would not have been soon enough for the Soboyejos to vote in the upcoming election. On a snowy Wednesday in January, they spent $3000 of their own money to fly their family from Yellowknife to Edmonton to attend a swearing‐in ceremony. By Thursday they were Canadian citizens, in time to cast their vote. The Soboyejos felt strongly that democracy cannot be taken for granted. “I think that is where my interest really is,” Mr. Sobojoyejo said, “to say that I played my part.” 1 As we know from frequently cited statistics on voter participation, not all Canadians feel as strongly as the Soboyejos about playing their part, at least not where voting is concerned. Voter turnout for the 2004 Canadian federal elections was 60.9 per cent, the lowest in the history of Canada (Elections Canada, 2004). Nearly nine million registered voters did not show up at the polls. Voting rates in the U.S.A. show similar declines. Although, in the 2004 U.S. presidential election, there was an upturn in the latest voting rates, these followed a forty year decline, and still only 60.7 per cent of eligible U.S. voters participated. Although in Canada and other democracies voting is certainly not the only form of political participation, especially among youth and young adults, it is a key indicator of political engagement. Several studies have found a strong correlation between voting and other forms of civic engagement such as community organizing and protesting. In fact, many of these other indicators of civic engagement are down as well.

Abstract: The character of civics education is dependent on the worldview in which it is embedded. Thus, citizenship education that is not explicitly committed to a vision of democratic citizenship will be shaped by the dominant ideology of our times: neo ‐ liberalism. After contrasting neo ‐ liberal and radical democratic perspectives on civics education, we examine Australia’s new civics initiative as an example of how citizenship education becomes embroiled in the broader didactic politics of neo ‐ liberalism, thus undermining the democratic values of civics education. We conclude with a call for civics education that is politically committed to the values of radical democracy. Apres avoir compare les points de vue opposes du neoliberalisme et de la democratie radicale sur l’education a la citoyennete, les auteurs presentent une nouvelle initiative australienne qui illustre comment l’education a la citoyennete se trouve prise dans l’engrenage de la vaste politique didactique du neoliberalisme et porte ainsi atteinte aux valeurs democratiques de l’education a la citoyennete. Abstract: First Nations people have both a Constitutional and a Treaty right to education; however, the Crown’s jurisdictional obligations to provide educational services have not lead to similar educational opportunities and attainment achievement for First Nations students as compared to Canadian students in provincial schools. Canada’s Auditor General, in 2000, stated that Indian and Northern Affairs Canada could not demonstrate that it reached the objective to assist First Nations students on reserve in achieving their educational needs and aspirations. In 2004, the Auditor General noted a widening achievement gap.. Using statistical information from the Department of Indian Affairs and the Auditor General to consider educational financial accountability, the author argues that equitable financial resources are required to support First Nations students in band ‐ managed schools. Toutefois, les obligations de la Couronne en cette matiere n’ont pas eu pour effet de susciter chez les eleves autochtones des possibilites educatives et un rendement scolaire semblables a ceux des eleves canadiens dans les ecoles provinciales. En 2002, la verificatrice generale du Canada signalait que le ministere des Affaires indiennes et du Nord canadien ne pouvait demontrer qu’il avait atteint son objectif d’aider les eleves autochtones dans les reserves a combler leurs besoins et realiser leurs aspirations en matiere d’education. En 2004, la verificatrice generale notait que l’ecart en matiere de reussite scolaire entre autochtones et allochtones allait en grandissant. Se servant de donnees statistiques provenant du ministere des Affaires indiennes et du Nord canadien et de la verificatrice generale en vue d’analyser la responsabilite financiere du gouvernement federal en education, l’auteure soutient qu’il faut des ressources financieres equitables pour soutenir le travail des les Premieres nations dans les ecoles gerees par des bandes. Abstract: Drawing on several ethnographies with youth participants, I identified and critiqued three frames that help to comprise the mainstream media’s larger framework of troubled and troubling youth: inner ‐ city youth as “gang bangers”; teen mothers as “children having children” and “welfare bums”; and girls as fashion obsessed and impressionable. I considered the relationship between news coverage of youth and educational programs and curriculum and explored the possibilities and limits of various strategies aimed at producing and circulating diverse youth self ‐ representations in the mainstream and alternative media, including involving youth as co ‐ researchers. Key words: youth cultural studies, high school, participatory democracy En puisant dans plusieurs etudes ethnographiques faisant appel a la participation de jeunes, l’auteure fait l’analyse critique de trois volets qui aident a comprendre le cadre plus vaste utilise par les medias grand public relativement aux jeunes en difficulte : les jeunes des quartiers defavorises ou les membres des « gangs de rue », les meres adolescentes decrites comme « des enfants qui ont des enfants » et des beneficiaires de l’aide sociale ainsi que les jeunes filles vues comme des obsedees de la mode et des personnes impressionnables. L’auteure etudie le lien entre la representation des jeunes dans les medias et les programmes d’education tout en explorant les possibilites et les limites de quelques strategies visant a favoriser la creation et la diffusion de diverses autorepresentations des jeunes dans les medias grand public et alternatifs, y compris celles associant les jeunes aux processus de definition et d’operationalisation des recherches. Abstract: This study explored the relationships between student achievement and student, school and home variables from the pan ‐ Canadian assessment program administered by the Council of Ministers of Education Canada (CMEC): the School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP) Mathematics 2001. The study also evaluated the datasets used in relationship to their utility for statistical modeling of school performance. Student beliefs about mathematics are positively related to mathematics achievement for both age groups and for both domains of mathematics. As students’ use of instructional supports (parental assistance with mathematics homework, computers in the mathematics classroom) increases, there is an associated decrease in mathematics scores. Dans cet article, les auteurs explorent les relations entre le rendement scolaire et certaines caracteristiques des eleves, des ecoles et de l’environnement familial a partir des donnees du programme d’evaluation pancanadien du Conseil des ministres de l ʹ Education (Canada) (CMEC), le Programme d’indicateurs du rendement scolaire (PIRS) 2001 en mathematiques. L’etude evalue egalement les bases de donnees au regard de leur pertinence pour la modelisation statistique de la performance scolaire. Les auteurs notent une correlation directe entre les idees que se font les eleves au sujet des mathematiques et le rendement en mathematiques tant pour les groupes d’âge que pour les domaines des mathematiques. Plus les eleves font appel a du soutien pedagogique (aide des parents pour les devoirs de mathematiques, ordinateurs dans les classes de mathematiques), plus les notes en mathematiques diminuent.
