TL;DR: In this paper, an experiment in the Comparative Analysis of Distortion on Historical Maps is presented. But the results are limited to the case of historical maps and do not cover other types of maps.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the effect of colour tints on the perception of children and young adults, ranging from the sixth grade to the college freshman level, and found that hypsometric maps using spectrally ordered colours accurately transmit data concerning topographic elevation, but also transmit inaccurate unintended information concerning vegetation, rainfall, and temperature.
Abstract: This study has a twofold purpose; first to determine if the standard sequence of colours used on many hypsometric maps transmits accurate data relative to topographic elevation, and second, to determine if information intended by the colour scheme is transmuted into other forms, or if additional incorrect information is consociate with elevation data transmitted by hypsometric tints. These questions are examined through the perception of children and young adults, ranging from the sixth grade to the college freshman level. The results indicate that hypsometric maps using spectrally ordered colours accurately transmit data concerning topographic elevation, but also transmit inaccurate unintended information concerning vegetation, rainfall, and temperature. Little variance in the results occurs between the different age levels.

TL;DR: In some systems, the information on cadastral maps is definitive whilst in others the map is only an indication of what may be found on the ground as mentioned in this paper, and more recently there has been a trend towards the multipurpose cadastre in which a wider range of information may be recorded.
Abstract: Cadastres are concerned with recording certain information about parcels of land. The function of cadastral maps is to describe the boundaries of properties. In some systems, the information on cadastral maps is definitive whilst in others the map is only an indication of what may be found on the ground. The cadastre may be used for taxation purposes or for registering ownership but more recently there has been a trend towards the multipurpose cadastre in which a wider range of information may be recorded.

TL;DR: This article proposed regression-based scaling of the product-moment correlation coefficient to obtain similar map patterns for highly correlated geographic distributions and dissimilar patterns for uncorrelated distributions, and found that the symbols' ratio scale is not obstructed if legends contain representative ranges of circles sizes.
Abstract: Most cartographic research on the communication effectiveness of graduated circles has been directed toward value estimation tasks. Apparent value rescaling of graduated circles has no inherent effect on visual cross-correlation, and another type of design modification is needed to improve Judgments of similarity. Regression-based scaling is grounded in the linear regression model underlying the product-moment correlation coefficient and is a means for obtaining similar map patterns for highly correlated geographic distributions and dissimilar patterns for uncorrelated distributions. Although this design modification destroys the symbols' ratio scale, value estimation tasks are not obstructed if legends contain representative ranges of circles sizes.

TL;DR: Common isopleth mapping based on data for arbitrary areal units and linear interpolation procedures presents many cartographic problems which can be solved or circumvented by the use of continuous scanning isodensitometry.
Abstract: Common isopleth mapping based on data for arbitrary areal units and linear interpolation procedures presents many cartographic problems which can be solved or circumvented by the use of continuous scanning isodensitometry. Optionally an optical or digital technique may be employed to create isopleths of uniform reliability from data recorded by coordinate position or as a photographic image.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the HRD-1 Laser-display can be used to provide a faster and more efficient tool for interactive graphics in high-accuracy automated cartography.
Abstract: The HRD-1 Laser-display uses innovative technology to allow accurate display of large amounts of data on a screen as large or larger than most maps. It provides facilities for interacting with the data on the screen, and also for creating accurate hard copy on microfiche. The plotting speed is fast, being more comparable to that of a small format storage display, than to that of a high-accuracy flat-bed plotter. Thus the Laser-display has many advantages over the more familiar storage and refresh displays or plotters. This paper describes the integration of such a display into a pre-existing system that produces maps by interactive graphics and other automated methods. Special emphasis is placed on its interactive use, although use as a plotter is also discussed. The display is evaluated as a cartographic tool. It is concluded that the display can be used to provide a faster and more efficient tool for interactive graphics in high-accuracy automated cartography.

TL;DR: In this paper, a brief review is made of the geological surveys and accounts of the Shetland Islands, made over a period of two hundred years, which culminated in the publication, by Samuel Hibbert, of the earliest geological maps of the islands in 1820-22.
