TL;DR: A new algorithm for automatic identification of identical points on mutually oriented stereopair photographs which is based on the method of dynamic programming, and it is concluded that it has prospects in the automation of stereophotogrammetric processes.
Abstract: 1. We propose a new algorithm for automatic identification of identical points on mutually oriented stereopair photographs which is based on the method of dynamic programming. The algo rithm differs profitably from the known correlation methods in the fact that in it we allow for the basic physical properties of real stereopair photographs, in particular, the ordered arrangement of identical regions on the photograph, the constrained steepness, and the constrained terrain-relief altitude gradient. 2. The experimental results with this algorithm for real data permitted us to conclude that it has prospects in the automation of stereophotogrammetric processes. 3. The specific shortcoming of this algorithm is the requirement of a large amount of operative memory and high computer speed in its programmed realization. However, this shortcoming is not insurmountable.
