TL;DR: A genealogical sketch of the new materialisms can be found in this paper, where the authors examine the re-definitions of concepts like matter, agency, discursivity, and intentionality with regard to their effects on ecocriticism and in terms of their ethical perspectives.
Abstract: The proliferation of studies bearing on the intellectual movement known as the "new materialisms" evinces that a material turn is becoming an important paradigm in environmental humanities. Ranging from social and science studies, feminism, to anthropology, geography, environmental philosophies and animal studies, this approach is bringing innovative ways of considering matter and material relations that, coupled with reflections on agency, text, and narrativity, are going to impact ecocriticism in an unprecedented way. In consideration of the relevance of this debate, we would like to draw for Ecozon@'s readers an introductory map of the new paradigm and introduce what can be called "material ecocriticism." We will illustrate what we consider to be its main features, situating them in the conceptual horizons of the new materialisms. From this genealogical sketch, we will examine the re-definitions of concepts like matter, agency, discursivity, and intentionality, with regard to their effects on ecocriticism and in terms of their ethical perspectives.

TL;DR: In this article, Damasio argues that the body's needs set the pace and indirectly drive the brain's decisions, and that nature appears to have built the apparatus of rationality not just on top of the biological regulation but also from it and with it.
Abstract: Keywords: Dualism, Rene Descartes, Antonio Damasio, body, mind, nature The article aims at discussing and overcoming traditional dualisms which consider the body inferior to mind. According to Antonio Damasio nature appears to have built the apparatus of rationality not just on top of the apparatus of biological regulation, but also from it and with it. Failure to see this is Descartes’ error. Far from there being a separation, sharp or ragged, between mind and body, mind cannot exist or operate at all without body. The idea that the body’s needs set the pace and indirectly drive the brain’s decisions is not new, but Damasio makes a more interesting proposal out of it. In particular, he shows how this intimate body-involvement plays important roles in explaining some of the juicier and more mysterious facts of “phenomenology”. Moreover, this new dialectical relation between nature and mind gives nature a new value and a new role in our interpretation of the world.

TL;DR: In contrast to most other fictional texts treating ecological crisis, McEwan's Solar (2010) as discussed by the authors does not develop an apocalyptic scenario culminating in a collective catastrophe, instead, while on the level of discourse mocking today's rhetoric of risk, it stages the disastrous personal risk management of its protagonist by use of satire.
Abstract: In contrast to most other fictional texts treating ecological crisis, Ian McEwan's Solar (2010), celebrated as "the book on climate change," does not develop an apocalyptic scenario culminating in a collective catastrophe. Instead, while on the level of discourse mocking today's rhetoric of risk, it stages the disastrous personal risk management of its protagonist by use of satire. Whereas traditionally literary descriptions of natural disasters often function as allegories for social disasters, McEwan reverses this model by employing a private disaster to foreshadow a possible global catastrophe. The story can thus be read as satiric-allegorical risk narrative. On the one hand this concept is responsible for basic misunderstandings, on the other hand for praise as "the first climate-novel by an author of world-class quality." This essay first analyzes the protagonist's explicit reckoning with risk discourse, then unveils the satirical and allegorical dimensions of his own risk management to demonstrate the novel's aesthetic originality and the potential of this new form of eco-fiction.

TL;DR: The Anthropocene discourse defines new kinds of relationships between humans and nature by configuring a close interconnection and interdependence between these entities as mentioned in this paper, and it depicts ambivalent positions ranging from surrender and ecstasy to menace and demise that go hand in hand with the acknowledgment of nonhuman agencies.
Abstract: The era of human impact throughout the Earth’s biosphere since the Industrial Revolution that has recently been named the Anthropocene poses many challenges to the humanities, particularly in terms of human and non-human agency. Using diverse examples from literature, travel reflections, and science that document a wide range of agencies beyond the human including landscape, ice, weather, volcanic energy or gastropods, and insects, this essay seeks to formulate a broader sense of agency. All of our examples probe new kinds of relationships between humans and nature. By configuring a close interconnection and interdependence between these entities, the Anthropocene discourse defines such relationships anew. On the one hand, our examples highlight the negative effects of anthropocentric control and supremacy over nature, but on the other, they depict ambivalent positions ranging from surrender and ecstasy to menace and demise that go hand in hand with the acknowledgment of non-human agencies.
