TL;DR: In this article, theoretical analyses of the influence of ground-water conditions on the bearing capacity of cohesionless material are summarised and compared with the main results of laboratory and some field loading tests on sand.
Abstract: Synopsis Theoretical methods for estimating the effect of roughness of the base on the bearing capacity are outlined in the first part of the Paper and compared with the results of some loading tests on model footings. In the second part of the Paper theoretical analyses of the influence of ground-water conditions on the bearing capacity of cohesionless material are summarised and compared with the main results of laboratory and some field loading tests on sand.

TL;DR: The use of circular sliding surfaces in the analysis of stability problems in clay has become very widely adopted, and the history of its early days is therefore a matter of considerable interest, both to specialists in soil mechanics and to civil engineers generally as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Synopsis The Paper describes the work at Gothenburg leading to the introduction, in 1916, of the use of circular sliding surfaces in the analysis of stability problems in clay. This assumption has become very widely adopted, and the history of its early days is therefore a matter of considerable interest, both to specialists in soil mechanics and to civil engineers generally.

TL;DR: The slide at Bekkelaget, October 7th, 1953 as discussed by the authors was described as a big single slide with an even sliding surface parallel to the slope, and the stability calculations have been carried out through a Φ=0 analysis, which gives a factor of safety very close to 1.0.
Abstract: The present article describes the slide at Bekkelaget, October 7th, 1953. This slide took place in quick clay and comprised road and railway embankment in a length of ab. 100 metres and adjacent slope of slight declivity inclination in a distance of ab. 100 metres outside the filling. The gliding out occurred very quickly as a big single slide with an even sliding surface parallel to the slope. Comprehensive borings and laboratory investigations with stability calculations have been performed. Due to the existence of good maps and profiles the slide region could be reconstructed with great accuracy. The stability calculations have been carried out through a Φ=0 analysis, which gives a factor of safety very close to 1,0. No works worth mentioning have been performed on the site since 1920, and the filling must therefore have had a factor of safety close to 1,0 during the last 30 years. During this period no movements have been observed in the road and railway embankment or in the outside slope.

TL;DR: In the last 15 years, injection of cement-sand slurries into the subgrades of unstable railroad track has become a routine method of stabilisation in the United States as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Synopsis During the last 15 years, injection of cement-sand slurries into the subgrades of unstable railroad track has become a routine method of stabilisation in the United States. This Paper describes the equipment developed for the work, the grouting mixtures used, and the results obtained. Savings in cost of maintenance are, on the average, sufficient to repay the cost of grouting in about 3 years, whereas the benefits generally have continued for many more years. Fills that have become unstable because of accumulation of water in large voids have also been successfully treated by the method.
