TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the adoption of innovative tools for library instruction and services in Federal University libraries in South-South zone of Nigeria and found that fewer numbers of the respondents have adopted and used innovative tools.
Abstract: The study investigated the adoption of innovative tools for library instruction and services in Federal University libraries in South-South zone of Nigeria. The study cut across six federal university libraries in the zone with a total population of 93 academic librarians. The findings revealed that fewer numbers of the respondents have adopted and used innovative tools for library instruction and services which majority of the respondents are yet to use innovative tools for instruction and service delivery. It also showed that the frequency of use of the tools were staggered with social media and text messaging being the ones that are used daily, email was used on a weekly basis while Library Blog, website and OPAC were mostly used on quarterly basis and a general none use of radio broadcasting. The findings further indicated that inadequate use of innovative tools would affect patronage and adequate delivery of library instruction and services to the library patrons who are in different geo-political locations. The researchers recommended the need for library management in federal universities in the South-South zone of Nigeria to explore viable innovative tools for ilibrary instruction and services, Keywords: Innovative tools, Library instruction, Library services, Librarians, University libraries

Abstract: This study is designed to determine the trend of inaugural and public lecture presentations at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), from 1986 – 2019. A total of thirty-five hard copies of the inaugural and thirty-three public lectures were retrieved from the University Library for the research. The frequency of presentation, gender of the lecturers, discipline/programme, subject matter and trend of presentation of the lectures were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency tables, percentages, charts and graphs. Findings revealed that only a few lecturers have presented their inaugural lectures compared to the number of Professors in the University. More males had presented lectures, when compared to females. Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture and Management had low presentation. The subjects of the public lecture revolved around and demonstrated the societal challenges and issues at the time of the presentations. TL;DR: A survey was carried out among undergraduate law students in universities in Osun State, Nigeria to determine the predictive influence of awareness on intention to use Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A survey was carried out among undergraduate law students in universities in Osun State, Nigeria to determine the predictive influence of awareness on intention to use Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Proportionate stratified sampling was used to select 356 out of a population of 3269 students. A validated questionnaire with Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.92 was used for data collection. A return rate of 100% was achieved. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and binary logistic regression. Findings revealed that awareness of MOOCs significantly predicted intention to use MOOCs by the students (Odds Ratio=1.894; Wald Statistics=12.413, p=0.000). Findings further revealed that a good number of the respondents intend to use MOOCs (n=264, 78.3%). The Internet (n=92) was the main source of awareness of MOOCs, but slow internet connectivity (n=254) topped the list of constraints to the use of MOOCs by the students. The study concluded that awareness of MOOCs is critical to its use by undergraduate students in universities in Osun State. It was recommended that law librarians should create awareness of MOOCs among students. Also, law administrators, council of legal education and legal educators should work with the government to improve Internet facilities in the universities to enable law students take full advantage of MOOCs platforms. Abstract: The study investigated awareness of information and communication technology-based information resources in library user education programmes in South-South Nigeria. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of 1022 respondents which consist of 62 staff and 960 library users. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire of a four-point rating scale and observation checklist. Tools used for data analysis of research questions were frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation; t-test was used to test the null hypothesis at selected probability of 0.05 level significance. The findings revealed that more than half of the listed ICT-based resources were available in the six colleges of education libraries under study. The study also shows that the respondents had high awareness on these items. It was deduced from the findings that the method used to a high extent for awareness of ICT-based resources for user education programmes in colleges of education libraries was conferences. A validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The Cronbach‟s alpha reliability coefficients for the constructs ranged from 0.89 to 0.99. The response rate of 93.9% was achieved. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential (multiple regression) statistics. Findings showed that information behaviour and perceived risks had no combined significant influence on substance use among undergraduates (Adj R2 = -.001, F(2, 1417)= .627, p>0.05). Additionally, among other findings, it was discovered that information behaviour had a significant influence on substance use among the undergraduates (R2= .022, β = .149, t(1,414)= 6.420, p<0.05 The study concluded that information behaviour and perceived risks did not jointly influence substance use. However, both information behaviour and perceived risks, on individual basis influenced substance use. The study recommended that university management and stakeholders should intensify efforts to increase awareness programs to eradicate substance use on university campuses. TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the perception of children on reading, the audiovisual materials available for children in the public library, kinds of literature children love most, challenges inhibiting children from coming to the library, the lessons learnt and the implications of the findings.
Abstract: This study examined the perception of children on reading, the audiovisual materials available for children in the public library, kinds of literature children love most, challenges inhibiting children from coming to the library, the lessons learnt and the implications of the findings. The survey took place in the children‘s department of the divisional library with twenty two (22) children who are registered members of the library. There were four (4) engagements with children using children‘s literature and audiovisual materials in reading. The instruments used were reading inventory, literature, focus group discussion (FGD) and observation technique. The study found out that the participants loved reading. While 20 participants loved books with pictures, 2 refuted the idea. The challenges revealed that the library is far from their residence, among others. It was recommended that more advocacies should be done to schools for more attendance to children‘s reading while more audiovisual materials should be provided for meaningful learning. The implication is that if children are not inspired with new reading facilities, their interest will wane which will affect academic and knowledge. With this, the national development will never be actualized because these children are the progressive population for resilient cities and communities. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentage and mean. Results revealed that 59.8% of the respondents were male while 51.1% were female. Findings, however, showed that pattern recognition from experience ( ̄ = 3.32), critical thinking without emotion (̄ = 3.16), hypothesis updating (̄ = 3.607) and perception based confidence (̄ = 2.97) were the core skills used by the medical doctors in clinical decision making. The focus group discussion emphasized that medical doctors should possess critical thinking without emotions and good time pressure balance in order to make accurate clinical decisions. The study concludes that medical doctors have quality access to health information resources to make clinical decisions.
