Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived an index of the efficiency of vertebrate prey choice from the relative abundances of large and small-sized prey items, and then test the intensification models with late Holocene mammalian faunas from San Francisco Bay shellmounds.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of water flow on archeological sites in terms of the simple dichotomy between primary and secondary (or derived) context are examined. But the results of the analysis are limited to five excavated sites in Olduvai Gorge (1.8-1.2 my).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, an alternative class-analytical approach for archaeological interpretation is discussed, and the approach is illustrated using case material from the Mississippian archaeological record of the midcontinental United States.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a model for evaluating elements as potential paleodietary indicators is derived from information on the structure, remodeling, and mineral composition of bone, and the basic tenets of this model are: (1) without a firm physiological basis, no element is a valid paleo-dietary indicator; (2) there is great deal of misuse of elemental data in archaeological bone chemistry that is fundamentally unscientific; and (3) based on current knowledge, only barium and strontium can be considered valid paleodia indicators.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The possibility of temporally extended and spatially dispersed aggregations has important implications for large-scale and long-term land use patterns and the archaeological signatures of aggregation in early Paleoindian times as discussed by the authors.

53 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A review of the ethnographic literature suggests that a variety of socio-ideological and ritual requirements, rather than utilitarian optimizing principles, structures patterns of animal husbandry in pre-state, pre-market (or extra state, extra market) societies as discussed by the authors, and archaeological implications of this observation are explored in the context of prehistoric Cyprus, where longterm changes in the composition of faunal assemblages appear to be closely linked to transformations in social organization and ritual practice.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the question of why large, complex groups, appearing late in human history, have become relatively more frequent at the expense of smaller groups over time.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a variety of mathematically based pattern recognition studies are applied to the distribution of faunal remains and are used in conjunction with ethnoarchaeological data for the interpretation of spatial patterning and site structure.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of increased hafting on stone implements are witnessed in the decrease in frequency of related variables, notably functional units/tool and different activities and worked materials/tool.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The authors showed that most properly analyzed Middle Paleolithic sites are reconstructible as palimpsests, strongly suggesting that small groups commonly returned to the same locations through many generations, perhaps over more than more than a hundred years.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The most commonly applied technique has been K-means clustering in one form or another as discussed by the authors, which has been applied consistently to a relatively large number of sites from a wide variety of temporal phases in the European Upper Paleolithic.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors apply the chiefdom model to the analysis of social formations in the region of La Campina in the Upper Guadalquivir basin, centralsouthern Spain between the 19th and the 17th centuries B.C.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the spatial structure of Grubgraben, an Epigravettian open-air site in Austria, was analyzed and five distinct occupation levels were identified.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the Prisoner's Dilemma model is applied to the Iroquois game and the authors conclude that the formalisms of game theory as well as the individualistic orientation of evolutionary biology provide new insights into the study of social organization and political anthropology.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is ideal to have an affiliation related to each element of your proposal that requires access to certain individuals, groups, or information, and it would be helpful if you could list your ideal affiliations here.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the results of a site formation study performed on the Abri Dufaure rockshelter border, upper slope, and midslope deposits are presented.
