TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on the IRI (International Roughness Index), a new index for road surface control, and its applicability for expressways, and showed a formula which represents time-based change in IRI using the aging of the road surface.
Abstract: The objective of this study is to develop road surface control standards on expressways to provide driving comfort. This study focuses is placed on the IRI (International Roughness Index), a new index for road surface control, and its applicability. The questionnaire survey at 1999 provided certain correlation between the IRI and driving comfort. This paper shows a formula which represents time-based change in IRI using the aging of the road surface, based on the results of profile measurement on lanes for a combined length of 4200 km nationwide. We organized the relationship between road dimensions and the factors affecting the road surface, and identified road properties.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a storage penetration method of the heavy wheel load correspondence in order to solve the problems of rain water of the pavement surface and case in which large wheel load like the forklift works with the weak point.
Abstract: Generally, the area of the container yard pavement becomes 1.5-2.0ha, length of arrival and departure lines of the railway freight facilities is necessary over 500m. Therefore, it is changeable to the case in which it deals with rain water of the pavement surface and case in which it must make drainage structure in the extension direction and in which large wheel load like the forklift works with the weak point. Permeable pavement and storage penetration facilities of the heavy wheel load correspondence were required in order to solve these problems. Then, flow property resistance of the surface course material as a problem of permeable pavement, strength of permeable subbase course and thickness design, design method of the storage penetration facilities were examined, and the verification was carried out in the experimental pavement installed in the container platforms.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the relationship between characteristics of pavement surface texture and generation of tyre/road noise on porous asphalt pavement and found that an appropriate indicator of surface texture is found to make the generation of road noise clear.
Abstract: Porous asphalt pavement has been widely applied in every road by recognizing its noise reduction properties. We have studied the relationship between characteristics of pavement surface texture and generation of tyre/road noise on porous asphalt pavement. Existing data analyzed in the last paper are somewhat dubious about different factors of used materials and execution of paving method because of existing porous asphalt pavement opened for traffics. This study was conducted in almost the same conditions of pavement materials, production method of porous asphalt mixtures and paving execution in experimented field. Test results obtained from this study show that an appropriate indicater of surface texture is found to make the generation of tyre/road noise clear. Another analyze is also done on the relationship between power spectrum density of pavement surface profile and power level in 1/3 octave band of tyre/road noise. These evaluation indicators of pavement surface texture are effective for consideration of tyre/road noise generation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the surface profiles of runways using noncontact type profiler and vertical accelerations at pilot's station and center of gravity of aircraft have been simulated using wavelet analysis of measured runway surface profiles.
Abstract: Runway plays pretty important role when taking account safe and comfort operation for passengers and staff at airport. Runway surface profiles have been measured using non-contact type profiler and vertical accelerations at pilot's station and center of gravity of aircraft have been simulated using wavelet analysis of measured runway surface profiles. It has found that longer wavelength of profile is effective to vertical accelerations, that correlate to riding comfort. Its effect of airplane type has been evaluated, and pavement maintenance procedures also have been evaluated under consideration of above results.

TL;DR: From the results, a frequency response characteristic of the profilers, which is difficult to find by the evaluation index for a road section, is clarified and it is shown that even a simple measuring system makes it possible to estimate the true profile with a high degree of accuracy using the highly-repeatable profile r at a certain WB.
Abstract: Measuring accuracy of the profiler and analysis of waviness of the road profile are indispensable to the evaluation of road surface characteristics. This study deals with the measuring accuracy of high-speed profilers developed in our country taking particular note of the wave band (hereafter WB) of longitudinal road profiles. In considering, the band-pass filter is designed and the profile estimate filter is newly developed and the comparative study for the Repeatability and the Reproducibility of profilers is carried out using the PIARC EVEN data. From the results, a frequency response characteristic of the profilers, which is difficult to find by the evaluation index for a road section, is clarified. In addition, it is shown that even a simple measuring system makes it possible to estimate the true profile with a high degree of accuracy using the highly-repeatable profile r at a certain WB.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the airport pavement from the ride quality and safety standpoint which affect the pavement user's aspects. The study deals with a consciousness survey of main factors regarding the ride quality and safety of the airport pavements, the evaluation of pavement surface condition at a heavily-trafficked runway in Japan and a relationship between runway profiles and the results of consciousness survey. First, the rating of the ride quality and safety for the apron, the taxiway and the runway is carried out by the airline pilots. Main effectors of airport pavements for the evaluation become clear. Secondly, the wave band, which has an influence on the rating, is identified by the wavelet analysis.

TL;DR: In this article, a noise barrier of 0.5 meter width with resonance tube was developed, which reduced road traffic noise by 2dB on porous asphalt pavement by reducing diffraction noise by interference and has no absorption materials.
Abstract: New type of a noise barrier of 0.5 meter width with resonance tube is developed. The barrier shows noise reduction by 2dB on road traffic noise on porous asphalt pavement. Noise redution of the barrier of 3 meter height equals that of a ordinary noise barrier of 4.5.5 meter height. The barrier reduces diffraction noise by interference and has no absorption materials and the barrier has a transparent type. It reduces prevention of sunshine less than its height.

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural design method of overlay construction was finally developed by the use of multi-layered elastic theory in consideration of joints in CTAM, which was used to reduce the time during which the facility was closed for pavement rehabilitation but to have high durability against heavy duty aircraft loadings.
Abstract: Design method of overlay using cement treated asphalt material (CTAM) was developed for airport asphalt pavements, not only to reduce the time during which the facility is closed for pavement rehabilitation but to have high durability against heavy duty aircraft loadings. First, mechanical properties of CTAM are investigated in laboratory tests, and an in situ construction test was conducted. Based on these, the structural design method of overlay construction was finally developed by the use of multi-layered elastic theory in consideration of joints in CTAM.

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive approach to determine the optimum rejuvenator content is proposed based on Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) specification, in which the aging and performance-related properties are considered through Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometers (BBR) tests.
Abstract: The rejuvenator content is usually determined in Japan by penetration criterion in hot mix asphalt recycling. However, it is difficult to consider the aging and performance-related properties of the recycled asphalts for the conventional method. In the study, a comprehensive approach to determine the optimum rejuvenator content is proposed based on Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) specification, i. e., Performance-related Grade (PG), in which the aging and performance-related properties are considered through Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests.

TL;DR: In this article, the aging of high viscous modified asphalt was studied and it was clarified that refilling of oil/modifier component is necessary to recover and then, it was find out that SBS emulsion with good dispersion is effective to be used as modifying additive for recycling.
Abstract: Since porus asphalt mixture has large air void, the aging of high viscous modified asphalt in this pavement significantly progresses in short period. It often degrades as 10 (1/10mm) of penetration grade in 5 to 7 years after construction. In this report, the aging of high viscous modified asphalt was studied and It was clarified that refilling of oil/modifier component is necessary to recover. Then, it was find out that SBS emulsion with good dispersion is effective to be used as modifying additive for recycling. Also, modification of SBS emulsion improves compatibility of high viscous modified asphalt.
